🚨 Chatham Fire Department Recruitment Day 🚨

Today, members of the Chatham Fire Department responded to Chatham High School—but for a very different kind of ā€œ4 alarm call.ā€ This one was all about the future of our department.

With volunteer fire services across the country in critical need of new members, our firefighters took the opportunity to connect with the next generation right here in our own community. Thanks to the generosity of the Chatham Central School District, members set up a recruitment table during lunch periods to speak directly with students about the importance of volunteering and what it means to serve.

It was a great chance to share firsthand experiences, answer questions, and highlight the vital role volunteers play in keeping our community safe. We’re hopeful that today’s efforts sparked interest and inspired some future firefighters to step forward.

Interested in joining? We’re always looking for dedicated individuals ready to make a difference.

ā€œMeet Our Leadersā€ – Part 15 of our continued series introducing the leadership of the Chatham Fire Department to our community

Today we are proud to introduce Deb Ulmer, Treasurer of S.W. Smith Hook and Ladder Company.

Deb has been a wonderful addition to the Chatham Fire Department family. Since joining CFD in 2023, she has quickly stepped into a key leadership role, recently taking over as Treasurer from long-time and dedicated member David Sillman. Her energy, organization, and commitment have already made a lasting impact.

One of Deb’s most significant contributions has been her role as a driving force behind the ongoing consolidation efforts between Hook and Ladder and Ocean Fire Company—helping guide an important step forward for the future of the department.

Originally raised in Rockland, Deb brings a diverse and impressive background in education, business, and community service. She studied at SUNY Oswego, Pedro Henrƭquez UreƱa University in the Dominican Republic, and University at Albany, SUNY.

Deb moved to Chatham in 1985 after spending ten years teaching English and Spanish at SUNY Albany. She raised her two children here in the community she now continues to serve. Over the years, she has worn many hats—teaching at Berkshire Community College and Columbia-Greene, flipping and building homes in Spencertown, and launching her own businesses, including Computer Tutor of Chatham in 1990 and a freelance bookkeeping service in 2010.

Her long-standing commitment to community service includes serving as Treasurer for Little League and Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Since joining the fire department, she has also completed Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations (BEFO) and Fire Police certifications, continuing to expand her role within the department.

Today, Deb remains focused on strengthening the department’s future through leadership, financial stewardship, and her work on consolidation efforts.

Please join us in thanking Deb Ulmer for her dedication, leadership, and continued service to the Chatham Fire Department and the community we proudly serve.

🚨 Chatham Fire Department – FD Alarm Activation 🚨

On Monday morning at approximately 7:13 AM, the Chatham Fire Department was dispatched by Columbia County 911 to a multi-residential fire alarm at High Point Apartments on Dardess Drive in the Village of Chatham.

Cars 1 & 3 responded along with Ladder 58-51 and Engine 58-22. Upon arrival, Car 1 reported a heavy smoke condition on the second floor. The Ladder 58 crew quickly located the source—a malfunctioning washer with a motor/belt fire. Crews acted swiftly to extinguish the fire and shut down the appliance.

The building was safely evacuated, and firefighters ventilated the structure to clear the smoke. The scene was then turned over to building maintenance for cleanup.

šŸ”„ This incident is a strong reminder of the importance of:
• Having working smoke alarms
• Evacuating immediately when alarms sound
• Calling 911 at the first sign of an emergency

All units were back in service by 8:15 AM. Great work by all responding personnel ensuring a safe and quick resolution.

ā€œMeet Our Leadersā€ – Part 14 of our continued series introducing the leadership of the Chatham Fire Department to our community

Today we are proud to introduce Michael Blasl, Sr., Treasurer of Ocean Fire Company #1.

Mike is a nearly 20-year veteran of the Chatham Fire Department, where he has served the community with dedication, professionalism, and pride. For almost that entire time, he has held the critical role of Treasurer for Ocean Fire Company #1—demonstrating not only his commitment on the fireground, but also his leadership and stewardship behind the scenes.

In recognition of his tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to the department, Mike is a proud recipient of both the 2011 Captain’s Award and the 2025 Ocean Fire Company Axe Award.

Outside of the firehouse, Mike has built a lifetime of service to the community. Alongside his wife, Dawn-Marie—a retired educator and higher-education leader—he owned and operated French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home for many years. While ownership has recently transitioned, Mike continues to serve as Manager, maintaining his long-standing commitment to supporting families in their time of need.

Mike’s dedication to Chatham extends far beyond the department. He currently serves as President of the Friends of the Tracy and is an active member of the Elks Club and St. James Parish. He also recently retired after more than a decade of distinguished service as Columbia County Coroner.

At the state level, Mike continues to contribute through his work with the New York State Funeral Directors Association, where he serves on the Funeral Directors Support Services Board, including the Audit and Governance Affairs Committees, and as a board member of Directors Choice Credit Union.

Through each of these roles, Mike exemplifies leadership, integrity, and a deep-rooted commitment to service—both within the Chatham Fire Department and throughout the broader community.

Please join us in thanking Michael Blasl, Sr. for his dedication, leadership, and continued service to the Chatham Fire Department and the community we proudly serve.
