Join us as we celebrate Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week.

When people hear the term “animal control officer,” outdated images of someone chasing stray dogs might still come to mind. But today, Diane Byers, our animal control officer (ACO) is a highly trained professional who plays an essential role in keeping both animals and our community safe. With the 2026 Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, (April 12 to 18), there is no better time to recognize the real scope of her work.

Animal control officers are often first on the scene during emergencies involving animals, but their responsibilities stretch far beyond enforcement. ACOs are educators, mediators, crisis responders, and community connectors. They work long hours in challenging conditions and respond to emotionally charged situations with compassion and professionalism.

Some of ACO Byer’s duties include:

Pet rescue from dangerous conditions, including heat or cold.
Staffing pet friendly emergency shelters.
Reuniting lost pets with their families.
Assist community members who face eviction, incarceration or homelessness.
Investigate animal neglect, cruelty, and abuse.
Manage wildlife, farm animals, livestock and exotic pets.
Working closely with CPD, CFD and health department.
Community education.

ACO Byers has been serving our community since 2015.

Please join us as we celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW).

NPSTW is celebrated annually during the second full week of April (April 12–18, 2026) to honor our "first responders" who answer your emergency calls and dispatch police, fire, and medical personnel.

NPSTW recognizes the dedication, bravery, and calmness under pressure shown by 911 dispatchers, often referred to as the "Thin Gold Line".

Your Chatham Police Dispatchers are some of our most valuable team members. They work our phones, radios and other vital communication and information technology equipment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.

They are also the first voice you hear when you need assistance, or the first face you see when you enter our police facility.

In addition to their daily duties, they also receive numerous hours of specialized training in topics that could be anything from routine in nature, to critical incident response.

Thanks to our professional dispatchers who are experts in “managing our chaos”!

CPD’S CITIZEN’S POLICE ACADEMY CLASS OF 2026 CELEBRATES GRADUATION

On Saturday, April 04, CPD hosted the graduation ceremony of Citizen’s Police Academy, Class of 2026.

The 11-week 2026 CPD Citizen’s Academy started on January 5 and was held (almost) every Monday.

The graduates were exposed and had access to how CPD operates “behind the scenes”. Topics such as investigations, traffic enforcement, technology, communications, animal control, arrest and prosecution, K9, search and rescue and more.

We congratulate the class and appreciate the level of curiosity and commitment they brought and the many discussions and questions they had.

CPD would like to acknowledge and thank our staff of dedicated officers and civilians who participated in the academy, especially Detective Sergeant Bill Massey. Det/Sgt Massey has been our “Academy Director” for many years and continues to deliver an excellent program.

We would also like to thank the following for their support:
Chatham Village Market
Town Manager Jill Goldsmith
Leah LaCross - Director of Community Services
Chatham Selectboard and Board Member Cory Metters

Their courage, expertise, and commitment to service makes your department stronger and Chatham safer.

Join us as we celebrate their achievements, honor their sacrifices, and thank them for their continued service.

With our region facing continued cleanup and power outages, Monomoy Regional School District will be closed again Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

We will open Monomoy Regional High School as a personal care site for anyone who needs to warm up, charge devices, get some food, and shower. The high school will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please note that this is not a drop-off situation and all parents/caregivers need to remain on site.

Many thanks to all who are working hard to get our community back up and running. 🦈
