The Chatham Borough Police Department is aware of significant public discussion and speculation regarding the motor vehicle–pedestrian crash that occurred on May 5, 2026, at the intersection of North Passaic Avenue and Weston Avenue. As with all serious crashes, our Traffic Safety Unit conducted a thorough investigation that included witness statements, scene evidence, and review of available dash camera footage.

Based upon the investigation, the evidence indicates that the pedestrian was running westbound across the north side crosswalk, similar to a jogger’s pace, while looking northbound and wearing earbuds. The pedestrian ran into the roadway just as the northbound vehicle entered the intersection. Dash camera footage further shows the driver taking immediate evasive action, including swerving into the southbound lane in an attempt to avoid the collision. The evidence indicates the pedestrian impacted the passenger side of the vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, the pedestrian will be issued a motor vehicle summons related to actions that contributed to the crash. At this time, the investigation has not revealed evidence of criminal or reckless conduct by the driver.

We recognize that incidents involving pedestrians are emotional and often generate understandable concern within the community and we thank you for your patience as we reviewed this case.

Although this investigation determined that the driver’s actions were not a contributing factor to the crash, the Chatham Borough Police Department will still be reviewing the intersection with the Chatham Borough Long-Range Traffic Safety Committee, Borough Engineering, and Morris County Engineering to determine whether additional traffic safety measures may further enhance pedestrian and motorist safety at this location. Additionally, prior to this crash, an issue involving the pedestrian crossing lights at the intersection had already been identified and was under review by our Traffic Unit and a licensed electrician, with replacement parts previously ordered for repair.

This incident serves as an important reminder that both motorists and pedestrians share responsibility for roadway safety. Drivers must remain attentive and prepared for sudden hazards, while pedestrians must remain alert, avoid distractions, and ensure it is safe before entering or crossing a roadway.

We wish the injured resident a full and speedy recovery.

🚧 Traffic Advisory: Road Closure 🚧

Lafayette Avenue is currently closed between Main Street and Kings Road and is expected to remain closed until approximately 3:00 PM.

Earlier today, a truck struck low-hanging wires, resulting in a pole snapping. This pole supports multiple communication lines, rendering the roadway unsafe and impassable. Verizon crews are on scene actively working to complete repairs.

Work is anticipated to continue through the afternoon school dismissal period. Officers are assisting with traffic control at surrounding intersections; however, motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to plan alternate routes or allow additional travel time.

Statewide Distracted Driving Enforcement!

During a distracted driving enforcement detail on Thursday, April 16, 2026, 35 drivers were stopped. In just two hours 16 of those drivers were issued a summons!

Under N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3, using a wireless telephone or electronic communication device while operating a moving motor vehicle on a public road is unlawful unless it is used hands-free, with limited emergency exceptions. The law sets penalties at $200-$400 for a first offense, $400-$600 for a second offense, and $600-$800 for a third or subsequent offense. A third or subsequent offense may also bring 3 motor vehicle points and a possible 90-day license suspension.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
• Pull over and park in a safe location before using the phone to send or read a text message.
• Ask a passenger to be the “designated texter” and allow them to manage calls and messages during the drive.
• Avoid social media scrolling and any form of messaging while behind the wheel.
• Use “Do Not Disturb” mode to silence notifications.
• Drivers can put their phone in the trunk, glove box or back seat of the vehicle to break the habit of driving distracted.
