Ever have a dumpster fire of a day, especially on a Monday? We may joke about using that expression, but actual dumpster fires are no laughing matter.

Last week, Chatham Fire Department responded to a real dumpster fire. Fortunately, crews arrived quickly and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread or caused extensive damage.

Dumpster fires can become dangerous very quickly, especially when they are located near buildings, vehicles, trees, or dry brush. What starts as a small fire can rapidly extend to surrounding structures and create a much larger emergency.

To help prevent dumpster fires:
🔥 Never dispose of hot ashes or charcoal in a dumpster.
🔥 Make sure smoking materials are completely extinguished before throwing them away.
🔥 Keep dumpsters clear of combustible materials around them.
🔥 Report any signs of fire immediately by calling 911.

We're always ready to respond, but a little prevention can go a long way in keeping our community safe.

Stay safe, Chatham!
