Residents across Washington County are being encouraged to show their patriotic spirit as communities begin celebrating America’s upcoming 250th anniversary leading up to the Fourth of July.
Officials and community leaders in Washington County, along with the towns of Chatom, McIntosh, and Millry, are asking residents, businesses, churches, and organizations to decorate homes, storefronts, and public spaces in red, white, and blue as part of the countywide celebration effort.
American flags, patriotic banners, lights, wreaths, and other decorations are encouraged as communities prepare to honor the nation’s historic milestone and celebrate local pride throughout the summer.
Leaders say the effort is designed to bring communities together while creating a festive atmosphere across the county ahead of Independence Day activities and future America 250 celebrations.
Residents traveling throughout Washington County are expected to begin seeing more patriotic displays appearing over the next several weeks as the celebration effort continues through the Fourth of July holiday.

Update 4:48 p.m. roadway opened for both lanes

1:55 p.m. one lane is open, more details on the roadway reopening to normal traffic later this evening.

Emergency crews remain on scene at a natural gas leak reported Wednesday 10:52 a.m. along Highway 56 across from the Washington County District 2 Road Department building at 17907 Highway 56 in the Chatom area.
Officials said the roadway remains closed in the immediate area while crews wait for the gas company to determine when it is safe to reopen traffic. The leak was reportedly caused after a gas line was struck by a fiber construction company.
Traffic is currently being rerouted through County Road 28 and County Road 12 as emergency personnel continue monitoring the scene.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use caution while traveling the alternate routes until the roadway is reopened.

For the month of May, AltaPointe Washington County is launching β€œMove for Mental Health” to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month.

AltaPointe Washington County is inviting local organizations to join its β€œGo Green for Mental Health” initiative. Schools, healthcare providers, and community groups such as nursing homes, hospitals, and nutrition centers are encouraged to decorate in green during May and wear green on May 8 to show support.

This year’s campaign, β€œMove for Mental Health”, invites everyone to take small, meaningful steps to improve their mental and physical health. The challenge is to walk 3,000 steps each day in May to show how physical activity can have mental health benefits, too.

Mental health affects everyone, and it’s important for us to come together as a community to show support and reduce stigma.

You are not alone. AltaPointe is here for you, 24/7.
