Officer Dalton found a pretty good spot for a photo while out and about in Chattahoochee Hills today! 🌲💦

One of the best parts about serving our community is getting to work in a city with views like this. Officer Dalton stopped by the falls and managed to capture a great shot while enjoying a little of what makes Chattahoochee Hills such a unique place to live, work, and serve.

Last night, the Chattahoochee Hills Police Department proudly welcomed our newest officer, Officer Taylor Dalton, during a swearing-in ceremony at the City Council meeting.

A special moment of the evening was having Officer Dalton's wife, MacKenzie, perform her badge pinning—a reminder that behind every officer is a family that serves alongside them through sacrifice, support, and commitment.

🏅 LIFESAVING AWARD

During tonight’s Chattahoochee Hills City Council meeting, Chief Kevin Digou had the honor of presenting Lifesaving Awards to Detective Lee Martin and Officer Zachary Phillips for their actions during a mental health crisis on May 12, 2026.

Officers responded to Cochran Mill Park after receiving a report of a young man who was threatening su***de.

When Officer Phillips arrived, he found a 25-year-old man visibly overwhelmed, crying, shaking, and believing there was no way out of the pain he was experiencing. Rather than escalating the encounter, Officer Phillips approached calmly, introduced himself, listened, and began building trust.

As he spoke with the young man, Officer Phillips noticed a slight bulge concealed beneath his sweatshirt. Recognizing the potential danger, he remained calm and continued the conversation, carefully balancing officer safety with the fragile rapport he had established.

Detective Martin arrived moments later and immediately joined Officer Phillips in speaking with the young man.

When asked if he had any weapons, the young man broke down and said, “Yes… just get it off of me.”

Officer Phillips safely removed a loaded 9mm handgun from the man’s waistband. The firearm had a full magazine and a round chambered.

The young man later told officers that he had come to Cochran Mill Park with one intention: to take his own life.

Because of the professionalism, compassion, patience, and teamwork displayed by Detective Martin and Officer Phillips, that intention was never carried out.

No shots were fired.

No force was used.

No one was injured.

Instead, a life was saved.

The young man voluntarily left with EMS to receive the mental health care he needed.

We often think of lifesaving in terms of dramatic rescues. But sometimes, saving a life requires something different—the patience to listen, the ability to connect with another human being, and the compassion to give someone hope when they have lost all of their own.

We may never know where this young man’s life will lead from here. But because of Detective Martin and Officer Phillips, he has the opportunity to write the next chapter.

Reminder of FULL WEEKEND-LONG CLOSURE: All I-285 Lanes (NB and SB) Closed Between MLK Jr. Drive and Cascade Road, June 5-8, Metro-Wide Delays Expected

ATLANTA – Weather and onsite conditions permitting, contractor work crews on behalf of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will implement the second full closure of all northbound and southbound lanes of I-285 between SR 139/Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (Exit 9) and Cascade Road (Exit 7). While necessary for timely completion of the ongoing construction required to rebuild this segment of I-285, this closure will have significant impacts on travel throughout the metro area.

Weather and on-site conditions permitting, the closure will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, June 5, and remain in place until 5 a.m. Monday, June 8.

🚧 No traffic will be permitted through this section of I-285 at any time during the closure.
In addition to the full closure on I-285 between Cascade Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, one left lane will be closed on I-285 northbound between Washington Road (exit 1) and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (exit 9).

MAJOR REGIONAL IMPACT — PLAN AHEAD
This is a full interstate closure on one of metro Atlanta’s most heavily traveled corridors. Motorists should expect:

Significant, region-wide delays across metro Atlanta
Heavy congestion on I-20, I-75/I-85, and SR 166/Langford Parkway
Spillover traffic on local roads throughout southwest Atlanta and Fulton County
Anyone traveling anywhere in the metro Atlanta area this weekend should plan ahead.
Drivers are strongly advised to:

Allow substantial extra travel time
Consider alternate routes or adjust travel times
Check traffic conditions before leaving using the 511GA app or other navigation tools or wayfinding apps

DETOUR INFORMATION
Clearly marked detours will be in place:
Southbound I-285 traffic:
Diverted to I-20 (Exit 10 A) to I-75/I-85 southbound
Northbound and westbound I-285 traffic:
Diverted to SR 166/Langford Parkway (Exit 5)
See attached graphic illustrating the recommended detour. Overhead message boards and roadside signage will alert drivers well in advance of the closure.

City Hall and Administrative Offices will be Closed

The Chattahoochee Hills Police Department is warning residents about a scam text message currently circulating that appears to come from Verizon. The message claims there is a request to access your account and urges you to click a link to “confirm or deny” the request.

⚠️ DO NOT CLICK THE LINK ⚠️

Scammers often use fake websites and urgent language to trick people into providing passwords, account information, or payment details. In this example, the link provided is NOT an official Verizon website.

Here are a few red flags:
• Suspicious or unfamiliar web address
• Urgent language designed to create panic
• Requests to verify account information through a text link
• Messages claiming unauthorized account access

✅ If you receive a similar message:
• Do not click any links
• Do not provide personal information
• Delete the message
• Contact Verizon directly through their official app, website, or customer service number if you are concerned about your account

Please help protect friends and family—especially elderly relatives—from falling victim to these scams by sharing this post.

The Chattahoochee Hills Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the Fairburn Police Department, the family of Sergeant Mark Smith, and all those who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Sergeant Smith dedicated his life to serving both his community and his country with honor, professionalism, and compassion. His impact on those around him will not be forgotten, and his loss is deeply felt throughout the law enforcement community.
