Our Fork It Over fundraising event at the Hotel Chalet last week was a huge success! The cocktail hour in the courtyard against the backdrop of the Choo Choo was followed by a delicious formal dinner in the ballroom, with plenty of time to socialize.

Huge thanks to our sponsors, Centric Wealth Advisors of Raymond James & Associates, the Hotel Chalet and Hidden Creek Farm .

We closed out the event with $108,510 in gifts and pledges. We are so thankful for the way our community supports our mission to end hunger!

GARDEN-TO-FOOD BANK. Meet Roy Bell, a longtime gardener who was excited to share some special red okra seeds with our garden here at the Food Bank last year. He also just happens to be the father of Lori Bell, our Chief Impact Officer.

The land he owns in Copperhill, Tennessee, has been home to generations of Bell gardeners. Lori told us, "I asked him how far back he could safely say that food had been grown on the land, and he said all the way back to his great-great-grandfather. My dad was born in the ’40s, so I’ll let you do the math on that. It’s in his Bell blood."

What he believes is pretty simple...there is enough food in this country that no one should go hungry.

She went on, "So those okra seeds have become something much bigger than a handful of plants in a garden. They are growing food for our neighbors. They are carrying on something that has been in my family for generations. And, in a small but beautiful way, they are helping my dad’s belief take root: there is enough. We just have to make sure everyone has access to it."

Let's give it up for our newest Retail Rescue* Partners, Oui Oui Boulangerie! If you haven't been yet, they are Chattanooga's artisanal Parisian Boulangerie & Pâtisserie, located on Main Street in downtown.

We connected them with our friends at the Chatt Foundation, who pick up the pastries that haven't sold at the Boulangerie a few times a week and share them with our neighbors. Thanks so much for your generosity, Oui Oui!

*Our Retail Rescue program is essentially a food-recovery partnership between the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and grocery retailers or bakeries. The goal is to keep wholesome, surplus food from being thrown away and redirect it to people experiencing food insecurity. Aside from keeping food that is still edible out of landfills, these donations help the receiving agency to offset the cost of food they source from the Chattanooga Area Food Bank. It also provides a variety of food to our neighbors facing food insecurity.

In simple terms: a retailer has good food it can't sell → the Chattanooga Area Food Bank rescues it → the food is sorted and distributed → local families and community organizations receive nutritious food instead of it becoming waste!
