The Trust was founded in 1981 as the result of citizens gathering together with the goal of protecting the Gorge for generations to come. With the help of cooperative landowners, TVA, the State of Tennessee and engaged citizens, our community has protected of over 17,000 of the 27,000 acres of the Gorge! Our mission is “to preserve the Tennessee River Gorge as a healthy and productive resource thr

ough land protection, education, community engagement, and good land stewardship practices.” The organization works to protect land, provide access, engage the public, and research the unique ecosystem.

This Blue Jay seemed keen to pose for the camera at the TRGT Bird Observatory!

Most biologists try to avoid assigning human tendencies and characteristics to wildlife in the name of science. But sometimes it’s hard to avoid when a bird strikes a pose like this as soon as the camera comes out.

Welcome our 2026 summer interns, Dulce and Coral! They have hit the ground running with rare plant surveys, trail work, bird banding, and more.

Dulce is joining us from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga where she is studying environmental science. Coral is pursuing her degree in biology from the University of Alabama Huntsville. Thank you for making this program possible.

Have you come across this mysterious matter in the forest lately?

Often confused with a fungus, this is a species of slime mold (Fuligo septica) that can actually move along the forest floor! It’s a large single-celled organism that has even been observed moving through mazes to find food in laboratory experiments. Its common names are a bit vulgar, so we’ll let you look them up on your own.

Spring bird banding at the TRGT Bird Observatory!

Pictured here are TRGT ornithologists, Austin and Robert, showing off a Veery and Red-eyed Vireo to a public group. A bird’s wings and tail feathers can often reveal its age thanks to features like molt limits (contrasting retained juvenile feathers and adult feathers).
