This morning, Hazmat/Special Ops team members conducted a “train the trainer” class on their newest piece of equipment - 20 foot Hazmat/Ops boat.

THANK YOU to Chattanooga Fire Department Captain, Raymond Reed, for overseeing the training.

With this training, they will be able to teach the Hazmat team members boat operators the skills to manage boat operations in hazmat water situations.

This boat can be used for mutual aid calls to help with any water operations if needed and with water special events such as Ironman and Triathlons when requested.

The Hamilton County Hazmat team conducted a scenario utilizing the blue container with the corrosive markings and UN 3265 placard in the pictures. Once we arrived on site we setup a single decon station, and the Officer In charge with the entry/recon team verified via the ERG the product and setup a perimeter along with the Incident Action Plan, team members donned suits and made there way to the drum and and carried a sampling kit along with an Overpack drum. Team members confirmed an acid utilizing PH sampling kit.

Team members were successful in the overpacking process and secured the contents. They then came to the decon line and were fully decontaminated before doffing their suits. This type of exercise is critical in maintaining a state of readiness for the real world environment, it was extremely Hot and humid however as the Hazmat team responsible for a large part of Homeland Security district 3, we never know the weather in which we are called upon for the real call.

Hamilton County Hazmat stands ready to respond 24hrs a day 365 days a year on the behalf of all whom reside in Hamilton County.

Hamilton County Fire Training Division:

I am pleased to announce the start date and details for our annual Hazmat and Firefighter-I program. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out!

This year, we will be providing books for the Hazardous Materials portion of the course, and myself and Chief Clift will be the lead instructors for Hazmat as well as FF-I.

Books for the Firefighter-I portion are still required and must be provided by the departments. Same books as last year.
Please feel free to share this course information far and wide with anyone who is not included on this email.

I look forward to another great year and another great class!

This afternoon, a boat sunk at the Sale Creek Marina located at 3900 Lee Pike spilling out fuel into the Chickamauga Lake. Hamilton County Hazmat and Sale Creek VFD responded to the scene where hazmat personnel laid out water boom in the water to contain the fuel to a certain area. No one was on board the boat. No injuries were reported.
