Dear Islanders

I started this page because of my love for this island and one place in particular. A place that my forefathers molded with their bare hands, a team of oxen, and a probably a whole lot of salt pork. Our parents and grandparents fished from here and made a living for themselves and their families, building their houses by the cove to watch over their fishing boats. This way of life could be categorized today as commercial use, but back then it was just called making a living. Today’s commercial use is not us rowing our garbage to Portland in dories but loading it in dumpsters and barging them off island. It also increasingly involves transporting construction equipment and other heavy vehicles as it is geographically a perfect landing spot from Portland. I believe we must all do our part to ensure our community survives and thrives as islanders have done since the beginning, but we must also weigh the costs and benefits of each proposal as a community and hold conversations as we have had for projects such as the Stone Wharf and Sunset Landing. Bennett’s Cove is a fragile ecosystem that is currently in recovery from years of pollution and human activity. It is not just the beach, but the wetland that is threatened by development. Without protection it could relapse back to its years of neglect, or worse could be filled in to make way for vehicle parking and traffic. If anyone ends up reading this, know that their voices can be heard no matter what their opinion is. I welcome any and all views.
