..INCREASED FIRE DANGER IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM EDT THIS MORNING TO 7 PM EDT THIS EVENING DUE TO A COMBINATION OF BREEZY SOUTHWEST WINDS AND LOW AFTERNOON RELATIVE HUMIDITIES...

The combination of dry fine fuels, relative humidities around 20 to 30 percent, southwest wind gusts around 20 mph, and temperatures in the 80s will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires today.

Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly.

Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state forestry or environmental protection website.

Virginia residents are reminded that open burning is prohibited before 4 PM each day through April 30th.

Be safe out there.

Virginia’s spring fire season is here, officially Feb. 15 – April 30. During that time, the statewide burn law is in effect, which prohibits outdoor fires between midnight and 4 p.m. 🔥🚫

Don't be fooled by the snow! Most of Virginia is in a drought caused by months of below-average rainfall. Already this year, DOF has responded to 80 wildfires that have burned nearly 800 acres.

The best ways you can prevent wildfires:
🔥 Wait until after the fire season to burn yard debris
🔥 If you must burn, avoid windy days
🔥 Never leave a fire unattended
🔥 Know the state burn law and local restrictions

Get more tips, and learn about the 4 p.m. burning law on DOF’s website: https://ow.ly/3SsV50Yey8q

At around 10:30 pm on October 24th 2025, Floyd County Volunteer Fire Department Station 3 and 1 were dispatched for a Structure Fire on Kings Store Road in Check. Units arrived on scene and found a single story wood frame home with heavy fire involvement throughout 50% of the structure. Crews began an offensive attack and command was established. Due to the building construction and heavy fire conditions, the structure experienced a partial collapse which made for extensive overhaul operations to fully extinguish the fire. The fire was extinguished around 1:30 AM and there were no injuries.

Units on scene as follows:

Wagon 3
Tanker 32
Tanker 3
Chief 3

Tanker 11
Tanker 1
Attack 1
Chief 1

We want to thank our 14 volunteers from Station 3 and several others from Station 1 that dedicated their night to battle this fire.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to our community members that allow us to use their ponds as a water supply.
