Thank you to all that have reached out. Our Geocove family is safe, but our hearts are broken for our Buffalo / Western New York family.
It's always somewhere else, until it's not. Everything is local to someone. This time, it was here, in our backyard, affecting our community.
This is not a random act in a far away land. This is the land of chicken wings and geo-geeks. Big lakes and bigger support for our Bills. Sunday dinners at Grandma's with the cousins and snow storms that'll bury houses.
We chose to move Geocove back to Buffalo 7 years ago. The City of Good Neighbors. There is a community here that is rivaled by few others. Don't believe me? Go to a Bills away game. Walk the streets and witness perfect strangers greet each other because they've realized that they're both Bills fans and/or from Buffalo.
I encourage you to reach outside of your normal and comfortable place and make a phone call. Tell someone in your local, state or federal government that you're scared. You're pi**ed. You're .
It's way, way past time to take action. You. YOU need to take action, because no one else is doing it. And yes, WE can make a difference.
Together.
GIS/SIG live and in- person!

Greetings from the ESRI Boston State and Local Government team! Please feel free to forward this to anyone, in a private or public entity, in the Buffalo Niagara area that would like to collaborate or be a partner in this new Esri Community.
Please join us on Monday, April 4 at 11:30 AM for a Special Virtual Esri Community Connect Event in the Buffalo region! This event is open to GIS and non-GIS users in any industry who would like to stay connected with the GIS community and learn how GIS and Esri solutions can be used to tackle similar challenges faced by most organizations.
Our featured speakers will be from the City of Syracuse, Conor Muldoon, Deputy Chief Innovation and Data Officer and Joanna Bailey, Data Analyst for the Innovation Team presenting on real-time snow operations at the City of Syracuse. Recently, this city-wide project was featured in the Syracuse’s local radio station WAER. This article – The Geographic Approach to Winter Weather Operations describes how GIS provides the ability to manage location-based winter weather operations in real-time including tracking crews and equipment in the field.

Cambridge, July 1, 2020 -- Uncertainty is the currency of pandemics. As evidence on the new coronavirus, how it spreads and who falls ill from it emerges slowly, policy makers and the public have to base their decisions on the best information available. Experts help interpret the evidence, but they...

We are closing monitoring this story.
As GIS Professionals we are held to ethical rules. Some of which I've listed below.
* governing data : Provide full, clear, and accurate information.
* speaking out:
a) Call attention to emerging public issues and identify appropriate responses based on personal expertise.
b) Call attention to the unprofessional work of others. First take concerns to those persons; if satisfaction is not gained and the problems warrant, then additional people and organizations should be notified.
Under no circumstance, should any GIS professional alter data to affect the story, especially in a crisis situation that could impact so many lives.
There are times, that as GIS professionals we are restricted from sharing all of the information, but never - never should we be asked to change information that is being shared with the public without the understanding of those alterations also being made public.
