Do you recognize "Jay"?

The selflessness that people showed to help others during the storm is what WNY is really made of. A keyholder of the Pine Hill School received an alarm on Friday evening of glass break. Unfortunately, due to the deteriorating weather conditions we were unable to respond immediately to the alarm. Once we could send an officer to check the building they found one of the windows had been broken out. The officer made entry and checked the school but nothing seemed out of place. They thought that maybe the damage was caused from the hurricane winds till they saw a handwritten note left on a table. The note started with an apology for causing damage to the window and having to borrow the snow blower to rescue others that had ran of out gas and were trapped in their cars. The note was signed "Merry Christmas, Jay". We watched the video surveillance and witnessed people taking care of people. There was a freezer full of food but no one touched it. They only ate what was necessary to stay alive. They used the gym for the kids to play and pulled the smart boards out of the classrooms to watch the news for updates. They had 2 dogs they were also attending to. When they were finally able to leave safely, you never would have known anyone was there. They plugged the smart boards back in, cleaned up all the tables and things that they used. This group of amazing people took care of each other and the building they found shelter in. Neither Erie One Boces or Cheektowaga Central administration want any charges filed. We want to identify "Jay" and have him recognized for his going above and beyond actions that saved lives. Please help us identify "Jay".

The Walden Galleria Mall is CLOSED! The Airport is still CLOSED. Please no unnecessary travel. Most of our business are still closed and we still have streets that are snowed in. We will be releasing the tow sheets for the vehicles that were towed during the blizzard within the next hour.

We can announce that the driving ban has been reduced to an advisory for Cheektowaga as of 7am. Bans are still in effect for the City of Buffalo and City of Lackawanna. All of Erie County remains under a State of Emergency.

12/26/2022

Our overnight parking ban for the rest of the streets remains in place. Cars should not be left on the streets overnight in the neighborhoods that have the overnight parking ban.

THERE IS STILL A DRIVING BAN IN THE TOWN OF CHEEKTOWAGA. The Walden galleria is closed. The airport is closed. The shopping centers in our town remain closed. Please do not travel here from another town where the ban has been lifted. We are still trying to clear vehicles from streets and check on residents. Again, unnecessary travel slows our rescue and clean up efforts.

Travel bans will be lifted to travel advisories in many communities including Orchard Park at 7AM today.

The situation in other communities, ESPECIALLY the City of Buffalo is extremely serious and residents must abide by Travel Bans.

New York State will not be lifting the closures of key area routes including the I-90, 190, 290, 219, 400, Route 5 and the 33 which are impassable.

There is still a driving ban in effect! This is a critical time for the public to STAY home! We have to get the abandoned cars and tractor trailers off the roads so the plows can get through. We can not do this with people doing unnecessary driving and clogging the streets. The weather looks clear but we need this time to get to the people that have been without power since Friday that have medical emergency and people that are still stranded in cars. PLEASE STAY HOME UNTIL THE BAN IS LIFTED.

The Blizzard snow band has moved south into areas of Erie County that had not been not yet been hit by it. Erie County Department of Public Works crews are reporting snow rates up to 3" per hour in the band with whiteout conditions.

A Driving Ban still exists for all of Erie County.

12/24/2022

It’s still white out conditions with sub zero temperatures and the snow is picking back up. Everything is closed and there is NO reason to be on the road. Our warming shelters are filling up with people that are doing unnecessary travel. We are riding in an ALLTRACK vehicle to get around safely. Once night hits again and you come out on the road, there is a good chance you will be stuck in your vehicle for hours while you wait for emergency personal. STAY HOME!

This is the current situation. Please stay home. It is ZERO visibility with blizzard force winds. If you are involved in an accident and no one is hurt, exchange information and continue HOME safely. The police do not need to respond to a property damage only accident.

12/23/2022

A lot of people are without power in Cheektowaga. If you do not have power the safest place to stay is in your home dressed as warm as you can. We will be setting up warming stations however right now it is extremely difficult to get people there safely with the blizzard conditions. If you feel the cold is creating a medical emergency, call 911.

***Update Fatal Hit and Run from 2/26/2022***

The Cheektowaga Police have recovered what it believed to be the suspect vehicle from the fatal pedestrian hit and run collision that occurred this past Saturday night. Accident investigators were able to locate a vehicle with damage that matches that of parts left at the scene. A white 2011 Jeep Patriot was recovered and is in the custody of the Cheektowaga Police.

After private notification of family members, the victim of the fatal collision Saturday night is identified as 64 year old Paul Kitchen of Buffalo. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

We are working with the Erie County DA’s Office and continuing the investigation into who was driving the vehicle the night of the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call (716)686-3956 or text anonymously to TIP411 (847411) and type CPDNY and then your message.
**UPDATE ON SEARCH FOR VEHICLE INVOLVED IN FATAL HIT & RUN**

The following information has been learned in the investigation into the fatal pedestrian hit and run accident that occurred Saturday night 2/26/22.

After vehicle parts specialists examined glass fragments and the broken side view mirror left behind at the scene, it was determined that the suspect vehicle should be a Jeep Patriot between the years of 2007-2017. The color is still unknown.

In addition, after the fragments were examined, it was determined that the damage to the suspect vehicle should be to the front and driver side of the vehicle. Passenger side damage was originally reported.

We are asking any person with information to please come forward with a report. You are able to call the Cheektowaga Police Accident Investigation unit at (716) 686-3956.

Information can also be received completely anonymously by text or email. Send a text message to TIP411 (847411) and type CPDNY and then your message. Or click this link to submit a tip. https://www.cpdny.org/tip411
**ATL A VEHICLE FOR FATAL HIT & RUN*
The Cheektowaga Police are looking for assistance identifying the vehicle and driver involved in a fatal pedestrian hit and run accident last night.

Sometime shortly before 11:45pm Saturday 2/26/22 a yet to be identified male believed to be in his sixties was struck by a vehicle on Clinton St under the Route 90 bridge. The investigation at this point reveals that the male was traveling on the north side of the road on foot with the assistance of a walker when he was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound. The vehicle that struck the victim was not on location and has not been located. A passerby saw the severely injured male in the street and stopped to call police. The victim was transported to ECMC where he later died from his injuries.

Based on the investigation, the suspect vehicle is believed to be a Jeep SUV. Possibly a Patriot or Compass. The damage to the suspect vehicle will be to be to the front and/or passenger side and may have a missing passenger side view mirror.

Any person with information that can assist in the investigation is urged to call the Cheektowaga Police Accident Investigation unit at (716) 686-3956. Or text anonymously to TIP411 (847411) and type CPDNY and then your message.
