Town Wide Reval Secret Exposed
Since 2015, the town of Cheektowaga has been revaluing homes in parts of town for the real property tax assessments. The problem is, that the homes revalued in 2015 are still taxed at the 2015 values, while the homes that were revalued in 2017 are taxed at their 2017 values. Because home values have increased significantly since 2015, those who had their homes revalued in 2017 are paying a higher proportion of real estate taxes than those who had their homes revalued in 2015.
In our part of town, homes are being taxed at a higher percentage of values than in other parts of town.
One of the two arguments being advanced by those who want to cancel the revaluation, is that a town wide revaluation would hurt low income people, we have documents that prove the opposite, that a town wide revaluation would help them.
Property assessment is about fair and equitable apportionment of property taxes, not about helping or hurting one group relative to another. The current arrangement is putting a disproportionate share of the total property tax burden on property taxpayers who live north of Broadway, near the airport, or west of union road
Why would 4 members of the council want to end the revaluation program that would fix the problem, despite having spent $100,000 and 80% complete. We must let the council know that this is unacceptable.
If you think that this unfair, please meet at Cheektowaga Town hall, Tuesday Sept. 24th at 7pm.
