The 1st Platoon celebrated the Labor Day holiday with their families at the firehouse today. Being a firefighter is like being part of a big family. Having everyone together is what the firehouse is all about. It was nice to spend the afternoon together before all these kids go back to school tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone in the county who participated in today’s training. Your participation is crucial to ensure the people flying in and out of Western New York are safe.

Tonight the 1st Platoon participated in refresher EMS training. Since everyone in the firehouse is overly competitive, checking blood sugars turned into a competition. The highest blood sugar was punished with buying the platoon ice cream. The lowest blood sugar was forced to go pick it up. Our highest blood sugar was 144 and the lowest was 62. I’m not sure why we punished the person with the lowest, but those were the rules set by Firefighter Szymanski.
Great job keeping training fun and engaging.
I think next time we will challenge another Fire Department.

Congratulations Lee!!
Lee Weitz has been appointed as the NFTA's new Director of Aviation.
Lee joined the NFTA in 2005 as the Deputy Director of Aviation with extensive aviation experience. Prior to working with the NFTA, Lee held numerous positions with US Airways.
Please join in congratulating Lee on his new position!

We'd like to thank all of our local fire departments as well as those from neighboring agencies for their assistance in yesterday's fire at the Buffalo's Best Catering building on Ridge Rd. Firefighters were able to clear the majority of the building for any remaining occupants before the roof collapsed, and they had several close calls. In addition to being home to the catering business, the building was home to over a dozen tenants, some of whom were still trapped inside on the 2nd floor. We'd like to particularly recognize WSPD Officer Leitzel along with Lackawanna PD Officer Strehlow who arrived on scene first and who are shown here in this photo that was provided to us. The smoke from this fire was overwhelming. Officers were able to use a ladder provided by a Good Samaritan to get on the roof, where they helped to rescue several residents through a 2nd floor window and assist them down the ladder to safety.
Although the damage to the property and resident's belongings was devastating, it can be replaced. Thanks to the quick action of a Good Samaritan, officers first on scene, and to the bravery of the firefighters, there was no loss of life or major injuries. Thank you to all that assisted.

Over the past few weeks, every platoon participated in forcible entry and through the lock training from the Erie County Fire Safety Training Division.
Today was the final day of training and we decided to smoke up the trailer. We practiced forcing inward and outward swing doors in limited and zero visibility situations to create a realistic scenario that could happen at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
Thank you Erie County!

Today’s random act of kindness.
While in downtown Buffalo today doing interviews for new firefighters, Assistant Chief Kluck and the other Assistant Chiefs went to lunch at the Washington Square. Assistant Chief Kluck noticed a homeless woman sitting at the bar and asked the waitress if the woman was a regular visitor to the restaurant. The waitress said she was a regular visitor to the restaurant and they normally give her a glass of water and a bag of chips. Without hesitation, Assistant Chief Kluck gave the waitress money and told her to let the woman order whatever she wanted for lunch. When the woman realized the generosity of Assistant Chief Kluck, she became emotional. The two shared a touching moment together before Assistant Chief Kluck left the restaurant.
Great Job Assistant Chief Kluck. You made a difference in someone’s life today. We are extremely proud of you!

After 7 hours of trying to redo the floors in a portion of the firehouse, and creating a skating rink inside, we finally asked a professional for help. Apparently everything we could have done wrong, we did. I guess we weren’t supposed to use 5 gallons of floor stripper on the floor. Who knew 🤷🏽♂️??
We definitely aren’t professionals at stripping and waxing the floors. We finally have the right tool for the job and we are making progress. Well, we are trying. We are still working on using the right tool to fill the floor machine up with water. We like to do things the hard way.

As tradition goes... when a firefighter retires from the airport they get an escort out by the ARFF vehicles. As Chief McDonald is in the black Tahoe he was given a water salute on his final ride out.

On Saturday July 23rd the Buffalo Airport Fire Dept Third Platoon responded to a mutual aid request from the Marilla Volunteer Fire Co. to a large brush fire on Clinton St. F4 and F2 responded to assist in extinguishing the fire along with multiple other fire companies. The off road capabilities along with the pump and roll features of our trucks make them very efficient in off road settings and when large amounts of extinguishing agents are needed.
