The Flow-Through Dam for Flood Control’s state-of-the-art design mimics the natural river and allows fish to pass freely upstream and downstream whenever the dam is not in operation – in other words, except when there is a major flood event. Check out the ChehalisRiverBasinFCZD.com to view a new video showing how the facility would operate!

Check out the new ChehalisRiverBasinFCZD.com to learn about the Flow-Through Dam for Flood Control, an innovative solution from the UN Environment Programme that minimizes impacts to the environment and river while reducing flood risk in the Basin!

The forests, streams, and rivers in the Chehalis River Basin are renowned for their diverse fish and wildlife. Protecting that wildlife is a key component of the Flood Protection Project.

The project goal is to produce no net loss – meaning the basin will maintain the same level of habitat function that exists today.

What is a 100-Year Flood?

A "100-year flood" means there's a 1 in 100 (1%) chance a flood of a certain magnitude could occur in a given year. Most people misunderstand that this refers to a flood that happens "once in 100 years"; however, a 100-year flood can occur at any time, which is why we're working to be as prepared as possible.
