At the last meeting of the Chelsea City Council on Tuesday, May 5th, 2020, the Council announced the Reopening Chelsea Responsibly Plan for our city relaxing guidelines on the use of our recreational facilities.
Today, Governor Kay Ivey announced revisions to the Safer at Home guidelines set to expire on May 15, 2020. These revisions will allow additional openings in our city effective at 8:00 am on Monday, May 11th, 2020.
They are as follows:
Restaurants are allowed to open at 50% occupancy with strict adherence to distancing guidelines and standards for cleaning and disinfection of the facility agreed to by the Alabama Restaurant Association and the State Department of Health.
Hair Salons - Nail Salons - Barber Shops are allowed to open at 50% occupancy with strict adherence to distancing guidelines and standards for cleaning and disinfection of the facility agreed to by the Alabama Cosmetology Board and the State Department of Health.
Gyms - Exercise - Athletic Facilities are allowed to open at 50% occupancy with strict adherence to distancing guidelines and standards for cleaning and disinfection of the facility agreed to by the State Department of Health.
Churches and Worship Centers are allowed to begin having services with strict distancing guidelines and standards for cleaning and disinfection of the facilities agreed to by the State Department of Health.
The maximum number to gather restrictions have been lifted as long as distancing guidelines are met.
In addition, we are happy to announce the opening of two city facilities. The Chelsea Community Center and the Chelsea Public Library will reopen to the public on Monday, May 11th, 2020 with standard hours. These facilities will be opened but will maintain a cautious approach to occupancy and cleaning standards deemed necessary to insure the health and safety of the visitors and the employees. Please see the website and pages of these facilities for further information.
We truly wish to thank our citizens and business owners for the sacrifices that have been made to keep us all safe and healthy.
Let’s all make every effort to practice good hygiene and distancing but also to support our local businesses as we begin to rebuild Chelsea in a safe and responsible way.
Thank you!!

Chelsea Fire & Rescue

Wanted to remind everyone that the new storm shelter on Highway 51 is the PRIMARY shelter for Chelsea. It is located in front of the tennis courts (next to the new fire station). Please park in the tennis courts parking lot for best access to the shelter.

We plan to unlock the shelter if a tornado WATCH is issued for our area. We have an AED in the shelter in hopes it will never be used. During the pandemic event, we all have stocked the shelters with a limited supply of gloves, masks, hand sanitizer and bottled water. The shelter IS UNDER VIDEO SURVEILLANCE for safety and security.

Please stay in touch with us thru this page for updates and if you have questions.

There is a back-up shelter, in case primary gets near capacity, at City Hall. Watch this page and/or Shelby County EMA site for openings. Be weather safe.

Severe Weather Update:
Shelby County and Chelsea are currently under a Tornado Watch that is expected to last until after midnight. Governor Ivey has issued a State of Emergency for the State of Alabama due to the threat of severe weather. This order supersedes the current guidelines for separation under the COVID-19 Guidelines issued by the Alabama Department of Public Health.
In response to the declaration, the City of Chelsea has opened 2 Storm Shelters. Both City Hall and the Hwy 51 shelters are now open and will remain open until the termination of the severe weather threat for Shelby County expires.
Everyone please be weather aware.

COVID-19 Update
In compliance with the order issued by Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Health, and in conjunction with the Shelby County order, and by recommendation of the United States Tennis Association, the Chelsea Tennis Facility on Highway 51 is closed.
The Governor’s order states that all “shared ball” sports are prohibited. Please refrain from use of this and all Chelsea Sports Parks and facilities and playgrounds until the order is lifted.
Let’s all do our part to “Shelter in Place” and get this crisis behind us.
Thank you for your cooperation.

COVID-19 Update “Correction”
The City of Chelsea posted this morning that it would be against the guidelines of the Order of the State Health Office to open Day Care facilities. That information was INCORRECT.
Article 5 - Section B states:
Facilities providing child day care, including any child day care facility described in Alabama Code 38-7-2, at which 12 or more children are in a room or other enclosed or separated space at the same time shall be closed.
Any facility offering day care that has capability of keeping less than 12 children together at any time is permissible.
The City of Chelsea apologizes to the owners of the facilities for the mistake.

CDC - Page Not Found

The City of Chelsea has received numerous inquiries from both patrons and hair and nail salon owners inquiring if they are under State Order to be closed at this time.

The City of Chelsea has not declared a State of Emergency so therefore this decision does not fall under the jurisdiction of the city itself.

Upon review of the latest directive and Health Order issued by the Alabama Department of Public Health, the following order is in place at this time:

Hair, Nail Businesses
“ The Department recommends businesses follow the CDC’s guidance for employers that can be found at cdc.gov/coronavirus
The Department recommends limiting the number of patrons and staff to less than 25, exercise social distancing, no walk-ins, services by appointment only, spacing patrons in waiting areas, and posting signs not to enter and reschedule if ill.

I don’t understand why the residents of Chelsea have to receive these papers in plastic thrown on our driveways. This morning 2 or 3 days later they are still at the end of many driveways and in the roads and the papers scattered along the roadside, they are a nuisance to me since I did not request it and they are adding to the problem of trash we already have on the roadsides. WHY???
Not sure if this is where to post... but in the front of Publix parking lot by the Drainage witch is is “ “Black and white kitty” he has white paws and a super fluffy tail.. I did stop to try and get him/her to come to me.. he’s was scared.. Definitely looks like someone’s pet and not a stray!
Mayor and City Council, are there any plans for additional red lights at other intersections in Chelsea in the near future? There definitely needs to be one at 39 & 280 and Publixs. Also, at Win Dixie & 47.. Yesterday, the traffic was horrendous. People piling up at all intersections. VERY DANGEROUS....
