BEHIND THE BADGE: A PHILADELPHIA POLICE OFFICER’S FIGHT TO GET HOME TO HIS FAMILY
PHILADELPHIA, PA — Twelve gunshots. One husband. One father of five. And a family praying for the day they can embrace their loved one at home again.
Today, the Philadelphia Police Department publicly identified the second officer wounded in Saturday’s horrific shooting in West Philadelphia as Police Officer Hector Rodriguez III. Officer Rodriguez remains hospitalized at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center after being shot 12 times.
Twelve times.
It is difficult to comprehend what those words mean. But behind that number is a human being, a husband, a father, and a police officer whose family is now facing an unimaginable amount of fear and uncertainty as he continues to recover.
As someone who grew up as a cop’s kid, stories like this hit close to home. I grew up knowing that every time my dad put on his uniform, pinned on his badge, and walked out the door for a shift, there was always a possibility that something could happen and he might not come home.
It is a reality you learn to understand, but never truly want to experience.
Last Saturday, Officer Rodriguez and his fellow 19th District officer, Police Officer Shane Seiber, were shot while responding to a call for service in West Philadelphia. Officer Rodriguez was struck 12 times. Tragically, Officer Seiber succumbed to his injuries.
Two officers answered the call that night. Two families had loved ones serving their city. Today, one family is grieving a devastating loss, while another is holding on to hope and praying for their husband and father to survive and recover.
And my heart goes out to both families.
I keep thinking about Officer Rodriguez’s wife and five children. I cannot imagine the fear, the uncertainty, or what it must feel like to wait for news about someone you love so deeply. When a police officer is injured in the line of duty, the entire family is affected. They are the ones waiting by the phone, sitting in hospital rooms, and praying for good news.
Five children need their dad. A wife needs her husband. And a family is hoping for the chance to have him home again.
Behind every badge is a person with a life, a family, and people who love them. Officers may wear body armor and carry the responsibility of protecting others, but they are still human beings. They can be injured, they can suffer, and they can find themselves fighting for their own lives while the people who love them wait and pray.
That is why today, I want to focus on hope, healing, and the people standing behind Officer Rodriguez as he faces the difficult road ahead.
I want to recognize the doctors, nurses, surgeons, and medical staff at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center who are caring for him. Their work matters, and I hope they know that their efforts are appreciated by the people praying for his recovery.
Most importantly, I want to ask everyone reading this to take a moment and pray for Officer Rodriguez and his family.
A PRAYER FOR OFFICER HECTOR RODRIGUEZ III
Heavenly Father,
Please place Your healing hand upon Officer Hector Rodriguez III. Give him the strength to fight through his injuries, ease his pain, and help his body heal. Guide him through every difficult moment and give him the courage and endurance he needs for the road ahead.
Please watch over his wife and five children. Give them comfort when fear takes hold, strength when the days feel overwhelming, and hope as they wait and pray for his recovery. Wrap Your loving arms around this family and help them through every uncertain moment. Please give them the opportunity to welcome their husband and father home again.
Lord, please guide the doctors, nurses, and every medical professional caring for Officer Rodriguez. Give them steady hands, clear minds, wisdom, and the strength to continue providing the care he needs.
I also ask that You comfort the family of Police Officer Shane Seiber as they face the unimaginable loss of their husband and father. Give them strength in the days ahead and surround them with love and support.
Please watch over the men and women who wear the badge, protect them as they serve their communities, and comfort the families who wait for them to come home.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To Officer Rodriguez: Keep fighting, brother. Philadelphia is pulling for you. I hope you can feel the support of this city as you work toward recovery. There are people who may never meet you personally but are thinking about you, praying for you, and hoping for the day you can return home to your wife and five children.
To your wife and children, please know that you are in my prayers, too. While your family faces this difficult chapter, I hope you find strength in one another and comfort in knowing that people throughout Philadelphia are standing behind you.
And to the medical team caring for Officer Rodriguez, thank you for the dedication, compassion, and hard work you bring to his recovery.
As a cop’s kid, I will always have a deep respect for the men and women who put on the uniform and for the families who make sacrifices alongside them. I know that when an officer goes to work, their family is part of that sacrifice, even though they are not the ones wearing the badge.
They deserve to see their loved ones come home.
They deserve more birthdays, more holidays, more family dinners, and more ordinary moments together. They deserve the chance to make memories that have nothing to do with hospital rooms, police radios, or the dangers of the job.
Right now, Officer Rodriguez and his family need our support, our encouragement, and our prayers.
Please join me in keeping Officer Hector Rodriguez III, his wife, his five children, and the medical professionals caring for him in your thoughts and prayers. Please continue to remember the family of Police Officer Shane Seiber, as well as the officers and loved ones affected by this tragedy.
A badge represents a commitment to protecting others. Today, it is our turn to stand behind one of our own.
Officer Rodriguez, may God give you strength, guide your recovery, and bring you home to your family.
