PACK TIME: In Mr. Dyrland's class at Westwood Middle School, Pack Time on May 20 offered uninterrupted math intervention for a handful of students. Students worked independently during this 30-minute segment, with more opportunity for questions and one-on-one engagement with Mr. Dyrland.
"The small intervention groups allowed for a lot more one-on-one support, which led to a lot of student growth," said Dyrland. "[That growth] was measured by a short quiz taken at the end of the week."
Pack Time also included a fun Lottery Game. If students answered a question correctly, they could place their initials in a numbered square, 1-100. At the end, Mr. Dyrland randomly selects 10 numbers; if a student has their initials on the square, they win a piece of candy! It's a quick and easy way to make practice worksheets a bit more fun.
Pack Time is a daily occurrence with different goals for each day of the week. Monday serves as a goal setting day, with opportunity to build community, while Tuesday-Thursday students spend time in intervention, i-Ready, or enrichment. So what does that mean? Students who are not meeting priority standard in ELA and Math can receive additional support by a content expert in a small group setting (intervention). Students who are meeting the priority standard in ELA and Math but are below grade level based on their i-Ready diagnostic spend Pack Time working on their i-Ready My Path lessons. Students who are meeting or above priority standard are in enrichment, where they can extend their learning in science, music, art, technology, P.E., or give back to their communities through service projects. Great to see students learning at every level!
