Dear CHS Parents & Students,
CHS is implementing a program called Project SUCCESS. The goals of the program are to prevent and reduce alcohol, to***co, and other drug use, increase student understanding of adolescent challenges, improve interpersonal relationships, and develop positive coping strategies. Additionally, the program improves student, staff, and parent mental health awareness when su***de, according to the CDC, is the second leading cause of death for teens between the ages of 15-19. Through normative and targeted prevention/intervention strategies the program helps to minimize risk and increase personal protective factors.
The new Student Assistance Professional (SAP) Abigail Shepherd will collaborate with students, staff, and parents to enhance resilience and social competency skills, communication, decision making, stress & anger management, problem solving, and resistance to peer pressures. She will be available five days a week at CHS delivering a combination of 1:1 student supportive counseling and small groups that allow students to take a deeper dive into topics like personal recovery, prevention, and coping with others substance use. Student referrals are made to additional services when warranted.
Abigail has had seventeen years working in inpatient adolescent mental health settings, experience as a mental health clinician at Excelsior, a social worker in Spokane Public Schools, and as an Education Advocate working in nearby Juvenile Detention Facility Schools. “I am here to support equitable student driven wellness efforts by walking with students, families, and staff to increase awareness and embrace a growth mindset that highlights opportunities within challenge-building resilience.
Student referrals by self/parents/staff/peers are encouraged during this challenging time. You can reach Mrs. Shepherd at:

Late fall and winter months cause a decrease in sunlight and sometimes decrease levels of serotonin and melatonin. This can lead to depression with signs such as social withdrawal, school or work problems, substance abuse, anxiety, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

If you or someone you know is struggling and in crisis, the 24/7 Regional Crisis Line phone number is 1-877-266-1818.
