Unfortunately, this year, we aren’t able to celebrate our office and team accomplishments in our usual ways. We aren’t holding an end-of-year banquet, no final meetings or farewells, and for our seniors, no graduation. In the coming weeks, we would like to spotlight our Eagle Volunteers Leadership team seniors and thank them for their involvement with our campus and local communities.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
SHELBY SHACKELFORD
Shelby is a Biochemistry major with a focus in forensics and a minor in psychology. She has been involved with the Office of Community Engagement and the Cheney/Spokane communities in many ways during her time at EWU. She worked this past year as part of our office staff as the Food Pantry Coordinator. She has been part of Eagle Volunteer Leadership team for two years. She’s volunteered at many of our events; MLK Day of Service, EagleUP!, and Harvest Fest. Shelby organized hygiene drives at the Dollar Store and Yoke’s here in Cheney. The hygiene drive products were made into care packages and donated to organizations like Blessings Under the Bridge. Shelby has also volunteered for Feed Cheney during her 3 years at EWU as their head waitress.
During Shelby’s time at Eastern, she has accomplished much more than all the volunteering we listed above. She has made amazing connections in her field and friendships that will last a lifetime. Shelby was one of two recipients of the 2019 President’s Civic Leadership Award; she was recognized as an exceptional student leader committed to addressing critical issues on campus and in the community. She was nominated by campus/community members and the two finalists were chosen by EWU president’s, Mary Cullinan. Shelby has also been a chemistry teaching assistant for three years, a summer intern for Spokane Public Defenders Office with their investigators, and a member of the Criminal Justice Club for two years. She also was the president, secretary, and event coordinator for EWU’s Forensics Club.
Shelby was also recently (TODAY) selected by The Faculty of the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics, to receive the Outstanding Service Graduate of 2020 honor. This is the highest honor bestowed by the department for achievement in service to the university and department.
After graduation, Shelby is looking into employment with federal and state agencies in their forensic science departments of chemistry, trance analysis, blood splatter, gun analysis, and crime scene work. She is also considering going back to school to earn a master’s degree in forensic science.
Thank you for sharing your time with us Shelby. We wish you all the best!
