A Message from Chief Julius K. Riley

As Chief of Police I have had the task and responsibility of informing you about our department's successes and mistakes.

In recent days many of you have seen a release by the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office regarding a contraband handgun found on an inmate during a search. The handgun was on a prisoner that was initially transferred from our facility.

After a thorough investigation of the arrest, transport, and intake processing of this prisoner, it has been determined that there had been a breach in our procedures. It is with regret to tell you that our officers failed to properly search the inmate, which allowed him to conceal the handgun, a Walther P22.

Two of our policies involving the transport of prisoners and search of prisoners during the booking process were violated. Strong disciplinary action will be taken.

I am extremely troubled and saddened by our failure. As Chief of Police I have to duty to be transparent and accountable to you, our residents. I would like to apologize to Sheriff Streater, the officers of the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office, and the officers of the Chesterfield County Detention Center. I can only thank the almighty God that none were harmed due to this failure.

To our residents, we will do better. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Julius K. Riley
Chief of Police

Yesterday the Cheraw Police Department had a great time with the Recreation Department's summer camp kids! Campers got to meet Cheraw's new K9 Officer, learn how our drone operates, and see all the flashing lights of our community engagement officer's Mustang. After the fun we ended with a cookout!

The Cheraw Police Department has been awarded a $17,000 grant to purchase body armor from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety! Body armor is an essential part of an officer's gear, and with a number of recent hires, the Cheraw Police Department has been purchasing a number of new vests.

Grants are an important part of making sure that local tax dollars can be maximized for our public safety mission, and we thank those in involved in applying for and awarding grants.

A Message from Chief Julius Riley.

I would like post this message of praise for the hard work of our dedicated officers and the excellent results obtained by our investigative division, particularly the efforts of Det. Sgt. Leak.

In September and October of 2024, a Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Charger were stolen from the Cheraw area. Responding officers at the time were able to obtain enough information from initial reports that Det. Sgt Leak, utilizing the Town's Flock Camera system, was able to identify a suspect vehicle with North Carolina tags that was in the area at the time of the thefts.

On October 31, 2024 Det. Sgt. Leak was able to narrow the search down to a suspect, and after additional investigation, he was able to secure a Governor's Warrant for a suspect who resided in North Carolina. This suspect was recently taken into custody.

The suspect is alleged to have stolen vehicles totaling over $1 million dollars in value from the Myrtle Beach area alone, with additional thefts in Charleston, Chamblee GA, Lafayette, LA, and Fayetteville NC, and is currently wanted by 40 other agencies. As a result of Det. Sgt. Leak's work and our camera system, this suspect will likely face federal charges.

I can not give enough praise to the dedicated officers of Cheraw, and the seamless work by our uniformed division and detective division, and I would like you to join me in congratulating them on this effort. Our officers represent our area with pride, professionalism, and love for our residents.

I believe there is no better place to work, and no better place to live than Cheraw!

Warmest regards,

Julius K. Riley
Chief of Police
Cheraw Police Department
