A Message from Chief Julius Riley.
I would like post this message of praise for the hard work of our dedicated officers and the excellent results obtained by our investigative division, particularly the efforts of Det. Sgt. Leak.
In September and October of 2024, a Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Charger were stolen from the Cheraw area. Responding officers at the time were able to obtain enough information from initial reports that Det. Sgt Leak, utilizing the Town's Flock Camera system, was able to identify a suspect vehicle with North Carolina tags that was in the area at the time of the thefts.
On October 31, 2024 Det. Sgt. Leak was able to narrow the search down to a suspect, and after additional investigation, he was able to secure a Governor's Warrant for a suspect who resided in North Carolina. This suspect was recently taken into custody.
The suspect is alleged to have stolen vehicles totaling over $1 million dollars in value from the Myrtle Beach area alone, with additional thefts in Charleston, Chamblee GA, Lafayette, LA, and Fayetteville NC, and is currently wanted by 40 other agencies. As a result of Det. Sgt. Leak's work and our camera system, this suspect will likely face federal charges.
I can not give enough praise to the dedicated officers of Cheraw, and the seamless work by our uniformed division and detective division, and I would like you to join me in congratulating them on this effort. Our officers represent our area with pride, professionalism, and love for our residents.
I believe there is no better place to work, and no better place to live than Cheraw!
Warmest regards,
Julius K. Riley
