The 1868 North Carolina Constitution was ratified by popular vote over three days, from April 21 to April 23, 1868, fundamentally restructuring the judicial system by adopting popular election for judges, merging law and equity proceedings, and abolishing the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. It created a more democratic, unified, and state-administered court system, including a 5-member Supreme Court and 12 judicial districts for superior courts. On this date in 1777, the newly formed N.C. General Assembly met in New Bern and passed legislation creating the state court system. The Court Law established Superior Courts, county courts, replaced the royal colonial court system, and established the foundation that evolved into our current system. Happy Birthday, N.C. Judicial System!

216,348 North Carolinians served in the Vietnam War. Fortunately, a vast majority of them returned home. Today is Vietnam Veterans Day when we commemorate the sacrifices of military veterans who fought in Southeast Asia and celebrate their accomplishments and perseverance. Thank you for your service.
