🕊️ 3rd Annual James Rivers Memorial Dove Hunt

It’s that time of year again! We know many of you have been waiting to hear from us, and we’re excited to officially announce the 3rd Annual James Rivers Memorial Dove Hunt!

The hunt will take place on opening day and will once again be a two-day hunt. We’re currently working to secure the field location and will announce it as soon as a harvested field becomes available.

🚒💦 Kicking Off the 2026–2027 School Year! 📚🏫

Tonight, we were honored to be invited to Cherokee Elementary School to help kick off the 2026–2027 school year during Meet the Teacher, followed by a water parade to wrap up the evening.

And if this were a competition, we'd have to say we brought the biggest water gun of them all! 🚒💦😄

We are very thankful for the opportunity to spend time with our students, families, and school staff. We want to wish all the students and staff at Cherokee Elementary School and Cherokee High School a safe, successful, and fantastic school year!

⚠️ A reminder for everyone traveling through Cherokee:
Wednesday morning is the first full day of school here in Colbert County.

The 25 MPH school-zone speed limit begins at 7:15 AM to 8:15 AM in the mornings and again in the Afternoon starting at 2:15 PM through 3:15 PM. The Cherokee School Zone extends from the 700 block of North Pike on the south end to the 1000 block just North of Cherokee Elementary School.

Please also be especially mindful of school buses on our roadways during the morning and afternoon hours throughout the school year.

We understand you're trying to get to work or get where you're going—but remember, these are our children. Together, we can all do our part to keep them safe.

🛑 Slow down.
🚌 DO NOT pass a stopped school bus.
⚠️ Use extra caution in and around the school zone.

Let's work together to make sure every child gets to school safely—and makes it home safely every afternoon.

Public Safety Update: Overturned Tanker Truck Response

On Friday, August 7th 2026, at approximately 9:32 p.m., Cherokee Fire, along with Keller EMS, the Colbert County Sheriff’s Department, and ALEA, were dispatched to a report of an overturned 18-wheeler at the intersection of Cross Lane and Industrial Drive.

Upon arrival, responders determined that the vehicle was a tanker truck that had most likely recently loaded product and departed from LSB Industries (Cherokee Nitrogen). The hazmat placard on the tanker trailer confirmed that the vehicle was carrying liquid ammonium nitrate.

Due to the involvement of a hazardous material, additional resources were requested, including the Colbert County Emergency Management Agency and the Colbert County Hazardous Materials Response Team (which consists of personnel from both career and volunteer agencies throughout the county).

Responders referenced the emergency response guidebook using the tanker’s placard information. Based on the recommended safety guidelines for this material, a precautionary perimeter of 150 feet was established around the vehicle in all directions. Entry into this area was restricted to trained personnel wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Nearby homes were located well outside the recommended safety perimeter, and evacuation was not necessary. No leaks were discovered from either the liquid product tank or the diesel fuel tank on the truck cab.

Cross Lane was closed in both directions for just over six hours while emergency crews worked to safely mitigate the situation. The trucking company provided an empty tanker trailer, and the liquid product was transferred from the overturned trailer to the replacement trailer, eliminating the hazard to the public. The trucking company was not affiliated with LSB industries and were only a product carrier of material produced by LSB and had completely exited LSB property where the incident occured.

After the product transfer was completed and the truck and trailer were removed from the ditch, the roadway was reopened before 8:00 a.m.

At this time, no additional information regarding the condition of the driver is available.

Update: This incident has been cleared.

⚠️ TRAFFIC ALERT ⚠️

We are currently onscene of a one vehicle Motor Vehicle Crash in the area of Highway 72 at mile post 1. There were no injuries in this accident but please use caution if you are traveling Westbound between Allsboro Road and the State Line.

The vehicle is in the Median but there are emergency vehicles currently present in both inside lanes of traffic assisting the driver. Please use caution while passing through this area until the accident has been cleared.

⚠️ Traffic Alert ⚠️

Please use caution in the area of Highway 72 on the Westbound Side between Family Dollar and People's Drugs. There has been a single vehicle accident with no injuries but there will be some traffic congestion in this area until the vehicle is removed.
