Come see us & our Cherokee FCCLA friends on the 14th! We will be out on the field house lawn checking car seats & giving out safety tips!

Cherokee FCCLA is hosting a Car Seat Safety Check on October 14th during Parent-Teacher Conferences at the Fieldhouse Lawn! 🚗✨

From 4-7pm, families are invited to swing by to learn about car seat safety, seatbelt use, and keeping kids safe on the road—while FCCLA members keep the little ones entertained with games. The best part is - Scotty’s Treats will be there! AEC is generously offering FREE $10 gift certificates to the first 15 families - thanks AEC!

We’re teaming up with our local police department for safety checks and a special raffle—one lucky student will get a ride to school in a police car after Fall Break! 🚓

***Internet Scammers Impersonating Local Business***

The Cherokee Police Department is aware of internet fraud involving a fake website using a small local business name.

The gist of the fraud is that the criminals have used a local business name to create a fake website that purports to sell construction & agricultural machinery to unsuspecting victims who are unaware that their personal and financial information, and often money, are being stolen by the criminals. In fact, the victims do not realize that they have been scammed until they call or arrive at the local business for the property they believed they had purchased from the fake website.

And what they are left with is loss of their information and money, while our local business has to deal with the victims either in person or by telephone while contending with their reputation being damaged through no fault of the business.

And both the victims and local business have little recourse since the criminals appear to be operating outside of the United States via the internet. A screenshot of the fake website has also been posted.

If you, no matter where you are located at, visited, contacted or purchased equipment from the website “lavickyfarmequipment.com,” please contact us or contact your local law enforcement as the website is NOT affiliated or connected with any business operated by the Lavicky family.

Incident #: 2025-0203
Date/Time: 08/21/2025 at 9:46AM
Location: 10th/Colorado

At approximately 9:46AM, the Cherokee Police Department was dispatched to the area of E. 10th Street and S. Colorado Avenue for a report of a male subject wearing a backpack and carrying a rifle.

Due to the location of the report of the subject being near the Cherokee Elementary School, the school was advised, and the school was placed under lock down as a precaution. The subject was not initially able to be located, and additional law enforcement officers were requested to assist in the search for the subject.

The subject was able to be identified with assistance from the public and it was determined not to be carrying a firearm and did not present a threat to the public. While this incident ended with not being as originally reported, we would like to remind the public to please report any activity that you believe may be criminal or suspicious in nature.

The Cherokee Police Department would like to thank the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Office, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for their assistance with this incident.

This is Ainars! He is a college student from Europe doing his fun summer internship in Cherokee. He just checked in with the Cherokee City Hall so he will be going to be going door to door in our city. Don’t be alarmed, he is very friendly. He is selling educational tools such as books, websites and apps for kids from toddler age up to high schoolers. This is a job that he is doing to pay off his college tuition back home in his country. He is from a small country called Latvia. If you see him in the city give him a wave.
