RETIREMENT OF ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF TIMOTHY A. MCGEADY
Congratulations to Assistant Fire Chief Timothy A. McGeady on his retirement from active service with the Cherry Hill Fire Department effective August 1, 2026.
Assistant Chief McGeady began his Firefighting service as a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT with the Deer Park Fire Company in May of 1990. On August 15, 1994, “Young Tim” became the first full-time Firefighter hired within the newly consolidated Fire Department, and was assigned to Station 13-3 which at that time staffed Squrt 1331, Ladder 1334 and Rescue 1335. In 1997, he was transferred to Company 1C which staffed Engine 1311 and Ladder 1314 quartered at the Woodland Fire Company during the day and running Ladder 1314 out of the Church Rd. Firehouse of Engine 1352 overnight. This company soon was relocated to the Erlton Firehouse in 1998, to staff Engine 1323 and Ladder 1324.
In 2000, Tim was promoted to Lieutenant where he remained at Ladder 1324 on the B Platoon. In 2002, he was transferred to Squrt 1331 and Rescue 13 where he would serve both the A and C platoons during his tenure at the “Heavy Rescue”. In December of 2006, Tim was promoted to Captain and assigned as the Company Commander of Ladder 1344, located at the Springdale Road firehouse remaining assigned to the B Platoon. During this timeframe he spearheaded the research and development of our current Ladder Company apparatus specifications and standard company functions.
Promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief in 2012, Chief McGeady was detailed to Fire Headquarters where he served as a Planning Chief for nearly a year working on various policies and procedures, one of which being the newly implemented Manual of Operations. His work in this position served as the foundation of the Ladder Company Operations Manual utilized to this day, and demonstrated his dedication to discipline, research and his prioritization of constant and relevant training. Assigned back to the Field Command office in January of 2013, he commanded the B platoon. In his ten years in the FCO as a Battalion Chief, Tim served on all three platoons, serving as a sounding board for advice to all of those he proudly mentored. After responding to a few significant high-rise fires, he led a team of firefighters and officers tasked with researching and implementing new hoses to be utilized for standpipe operations.
Chief McGeady was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief on May 13, 2023 where he commanded and managed the Fire, EMS and Special Operations Divisions of the Department. He passionately followed and studied the UL Fire Dynamics testing and research, and delivered numerous Training Programs to assist Firefighters of all experience levels in understanding today’s ever-changing fireground.
Retiring as the most senior, uniformed member of the department, his contributions to all aspects of departmental operations and administration are too numerous to list. His attention to detail, and his unwavering dedication to setting the example for newer Officers and Members of our department in all aspects of the Job, will leave a large void to be filled.
The numerous Departmental accolades Assistant Chief McGeady received throughout his career reflect the professionalism and commitment to duty that he carried with him to every one of the countless emergency responses he made throughout his distinguished career. His last day with the Fire Department will be this Friday, July 31, 2026.
