Here’s a sneak peek inside the new McKernan Supportive Housing Center in Blackwood.

This facility is about so much more than providing a roof over someone’s head. It’s about giving people stability, dignity, support and a real opportunity to move forward.

We’re incredibly proud of what this center will mean for Camden County and of the example it can set for communities across New Jersey. I’m also proud of everyone who worked together to make this vision a reality. This project is a true example of what can happen when people come together with a shared commitment to helping our most vulnerable neighbors.

Everyone deserves a safe place to call home and the support they need to build a better future.

As we head into Labor Day weekend, I want to recognize and thank the hardworking men and women of organized labor who have built our communities, strengthened our economy, and fought for the rights and protections working families deserve.

It was great to celebrate alongside so many dedicated union members and working families, and we were honored to welcome Governor Mikie Sherrill to Camden County. Thank you, Governor Sherrill, for joining us and for standing with New Jersey’s workforce.

I was honored to join my fellow Commissioners, the Camden County Addiction Awareness Task Force, community advocates, healthcare providers, law enforcement and residents at the Remembrance and Hope Memorial at Timber Creek Park in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day.

Each year, this ceremony gives us an opportunity to remember those we have lost to overdose, stand with the families and loved ones impacted by substance use disorder, and recommit ourselves to ending the stigma surrounding addiction.

For more than a decade, the Board of Commissioners has worked to expand prevention, treatment, education and recovery resources throughout Camden County. That work includes increasing access to naloxone, expanding treatment programs and mobile services, and making sure individuals and families know that help is available.

To every family who has experienced this loss, and to every person still fighting, you are not alone. We will continue working to make treatment, support and hope accessible throughout Camden County.

Thank you to SJ Magazine for highlighting Camden County’s ongoing work to break the stigma surrounding addiction.

Our “Breaking the Stigma” event brought together community leaders, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, educators, advocates and families for an important conversation about how we can better support those struggling with substance use disorder and those on the road to recovery.

Stigma can keep people from asking for help. By continuing to educate, listen and work together, we can help change that.
