Building housing that will be affordable for future Coloradans is only part of what we need to make housing attainable for all. Renters are struggling to afford rents right now, we need to allow local governments to stabilize rents and preventing evictions in order to keep people housed and prevent displacement.

He enters the next four years in a position of strength with Democrats holding a historically large majority in the state legislature.

“Here we had a case where tax cuts for working people and poor people weren’t [extended] and Congress went home. And I think it’s a disgrace,” Bennet said. The pandemic-relief package, known as the American Rescue Plan, expanded the Child Tax Credit for one year, made it fully refundable, so the poorest families could benefit, and for the last half of 2021, sent it in the form of monthly checks to families, turning it into a reliable income supplement.
“Unfortunately, it’s a reflection of the priorities around here,” he said. “Since 2001, we've cut taxes by almost 8 trillion [and] almost all of that has gone to the wealthiest people in the country.”

A great article that brings up the importance of making the child tax credit permanent. Thank you Senator Michael Bennet for continuing to advocate for Colorado families and their children.

Studies show that the expansion may have temporarily lifted as many as 40 percent of poor kids to above the poverty line.

On this tax day, we want to bring awareness to a report by our friends over at American for Tax Fairness. “Colorado’s 11 billionaires grew $15.3 billion, or 46%, richer over the first two years of the pandemic, from March 2020 to April 5, 2022. Despite their increased wealth, these richest people in the state likely paid little if any federal income taxes on those investment gains, unlike working families in Colorado who pay taxes in each paycheck. We must continue to use this free school lunch policy in our state, and the Senate can still pass the child tax credit! Please include the child tax credit in the economic package Senator John Hickenlooper and Senator Michael Bennet!

The state legislature is now debating how and whether to continue an expanded free school lunch policy. An impactful federal tax credit for parents has already gone away.
