At 3:03pm today your Cherryvale Rural Firefighters were dispatched to the Republic Services Landfill south of Cherryvale. We were battling harsh wind conditions and landfill fires are extremely difficult to extinguish and require a lot of water. With the help of the operators at Republic, Cherryvale Fire-Rescue, Liberty Rural Fire, Independence Rural Fire Department , Independence Kansas Fire/EMS Department , Dearing Kansas Fire Department, Coffeyville Fire, Neodesha Fire, and Coffeyville Resources Fire Department we were able to get the fire under control and cleared the scene just after 6:00pm.

This afternoon we were asked to assist Elk County fire with a large grass fire threatening multiple structures. Through a coordinated effort with multiple agencies we were able to successfully back burn around structures and allow the fire to burn itself out. Enjoy this small snippet of what we saw on our call. Good work Elk City Fire, Independence Rural Fire Department , and Elk County Fire.

Cold, wet, and icy. But glad we were able to provide some much needed manpower. Good work IFD.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Montgomery County Issues Burn Ban Due to Elevated Fire Risk

March 17, 2025– Independence, KS — Due to ongoing dry conditions and increased fire danger, the Montgomery County Commission has issued a burn ban effective immediately. The ban will be reevaluated every 3 days.

The burn ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including but not limited to trash burning, agricultural burns, and open flame recreational activities such as campfires and bonfires. Residents are urged to take precautions and remain vigilant to prevent accidental fires.

“Current weather patterns have created extremely dry conditions that pose a serious threat of wildfires,” said Montgomery County Emergency Management Director. “We are asking everyone to comply with the ban to help keep our community safe.”

Exceptions to the burn ban may be granted under certain circumstances, such as controlled burns essential for agricultural purposes, but must be pre-approved by the local fire department. Residents are encouraged to contact their local fire department for more information.

The county will continue to monitor the weather conditions and provide updates as needed. Violations of the burn ban may result in fines or other penalties.

For questions, please contact the District Fire Chief or Montgomery County Emergency Management Office at (620) 330-1260.

To report illegal burning, please contact the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office at (620) 330-1000.

Check and double check those controlled burns from early this week. As much fun as we have fighting fire. This is going to be dangerous.

Very strong and damaging southwest winds will create extreme fire danger on Friday. Damaging winds gusting over 60 mph may cause property damage, especially across southeast Kansas.
