Seat belt campaign focuses on consequences of not wearing a seat belt

Memorial Day marks the beginning of warmer weather, outdoor activities and weekend trips increasing traffic on Kansas roadways. The Cherryvale Police Department reminds the public to avoid dangerous consequences and buckle up.

The Cherryvale Police Department joins law enforcement across the country to remind drivers to Click It or Ticket. Drivers can expect to see increased law enforcement presence on local roads during the nationwide safety campaign, which runs from May 17- June 1

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up helps keep occupants safe and secure inside a vehicle, while failing to wear a seat belt can result in ejection during a crash—an outcome that is almost always deadly.

Seat belts are one of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make. Consider these safety tips:
• The right seat belt matters. The shoulder belt should lay flat across the middle of your chest and away from your neck.
• The lap belt should fit across your hips, not your stomach.
• Never put the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm.
• Children should be secured in age and size appropriate restraints until they are old enough and large enough for adult seat belts.

For more information about seat belt safety, go to www.trafficsafetymarketing.gov/safety-topics/seat-belt-safety

Shortly before 1:25 p.m. today, the Cherryvale Police Department was notified of a reported statewide threat involving school facilities. In immediate response, and out of an abundance of caution, officers were rapidly deployed to all school buildings within the City of Cherryvale. Concurrently, USD 447 schools were placed on alert status as a precautionary measure.

During this period, all students and staff were secured inside their respective buildings, and established safety protocols were strictly enforced.

At no time was there any confirmed or credible threat directed specifically toward USD 447 schools. Following a thorough assessment and coordination with appropriate agencies, the alert status has been lifted, and normal school operations have resumed.

The Cherryvale Police Department treats all threats to school safety with the highest level of seriousness. The safety and security of our students, staff, and community remain our top priority, and we will continue to respond decisively to any potential risk.

We appreciate the cooperation and vigilance of school personnel and the community during this incident.

Cherryvale Residents – Weather Alert for Today (April 17)

The City of Cherryvale wants to make everyone aware of the potential for severe weather expected to move into our area this afternoon and continue through the evening hours.

Forecast information indicates storms could begin developing as early as 1 PM, with the strongest activity likely later this afternoon and into the evening. These storms may bring large hail (up to 2 inches), damaging wind gusts reaching 60–70 mph, heavy rainfall, and even the possibility of a few tornadoes before 9 PM.

We encourage all residents to stay weather aware throughout the day. Conditions may change quickly, so it is important to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, such as a weather radio, smartphone alerts, or local media. Please take a few minutes now to think about where you would go if a warning is issued and make sure your family is prepared.

City crews will be monitoring the situation closely. If you do not need to be out during severe weather, it is best to stay home and avoid travel while storms are moving through the area.

Please continue to monitor updates as the day progresses and take any warnings seriously.

Stay safe, Cherryvale.

We experienced severe storms through our community, resulting in multiple downed power lines and significant tree damage throughout the area.

Emergency services, Public Works, and Evergy crews are actively responding and working to restore safety and services as quickly as possible.

Please give crews the space they need to do their jobs safely and efficiently. For your safety, avoid any downed power lines and report hazards if you see them.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work through recovery efforts.
