For the public's information, Broad Street at the traffic light has been shifted so the eastbound lane is closed due to a partial building collapse. Front Street between Pearl Street and Broad Street is also closed. Again this for a partial building collapse and all closures are for your safety this includes the sidewalks in that area.

Residents evacuated due to hazardous materials incident near Chesaning

Today we had an isolated incident involving a chemical spill at an industrial site in the village of Chesaning. The Saginaw County Hazmat team consisting of members from the City of Saginaw Fire Department, the Thomas Township Fire Department, the Bridgeport Fire Department, and the Saginaw Township Fire Department were called in to mitigate the situation. We also requested assistance from the Tri-Township Fire District, Elsie Area Fire Department, Chesaning Police Department, Saginaw County Road Commission, and Thomas Township Fire Chief to serve in multiple support positions while assisting the hazmat team. We also issued an alert through the Saginaw County 911 Emergency Notification System to notify residents in Chesaning Township of the incident and approximately 5 residents north of the incident were evacuated. The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and Young’s Environmental responded after the Saginaw County Hazmat Team had mitigated the incident to begin the cleanup process. We would like to thank all the members of the hazmat team, the mutual aid fire departments, and all the other agencies that assist with this incident.

We realize that multiple area residents were concerned with being near the incident and not being notified to evacuate. In hazmat situations wide spread evacuations only occur in extreme cases and incidents. Instead a strategic evacuation is used with consideration of factors such as wind direction and speed, geography, type of chemical, and the state the chemical exists in (solid, liquid, or gas). In the instance of today’s incident the few evacuations issued were based on the wind direction and speed. Through this whole incident the main concern of ours was the safety of the community.

For those that live in Chesaning Township and did not receive the emergency notification from Saginaw County 911 about this incident or any residents of Saginaw County are able to sign up for the service at the link we have provided.

The company and the truck operator were not aware that the buried tank actually contained a caustic corrosive chemical.

**Passed to me*^

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the town
The fire siren echoed, blaring it's sound

The firefighters came running from far and from near
And raced to the trucks quickly, donning their gear.

And I in my bunkers, my boots, and my hat
Jumped into the engine to see where the fire's at

Down at the corner of Fifth and of Oak
The dispatcher informed us " a house filled with smoke"

Smoke poured from all sides, from up, and from down
Yet up there on the roof there was none to be found

So up on the roof we raised us a ladder
And climbed to the top to see what was the matter

I came to the chimney and what did I see
But a fellow in red stuck up past his knees

Well we tugged and we pulled until he came out
Then he winked with his eye and said with a shout

These new fangled chimneys, they make then too small
For a fellow like me, not skinney at all

With a twitch of his nose he dashed to his sleigh
And called to his reindeer, UP, UP, and AWAY

As we rolled up our hoses he flew out of sight
God Bless our Firefighters and to all a Good Night

Merry Christmas and stay safe.
