With the 2026-2027 school year beginning tomorrow in Chesaning, we wanted to take a moment to remind residents about school bus laws. Michigan law requires drivers to stop when a school bus is stopped and displaying flashing red lights. Motorists must come to a complete stop at least 20 feet from the bus and remain stopped until the bus begins moving again or the red lights are turned off.

On two-lane roads and most multi-lane roads, traffic in both directions must stop for a stopped school bus. The main exception is on a divided highway with a physical barrier, median, or other clearly separated roadway; in that case, only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.

Drivers should also remember that flashing yellow lights on a school bus mean the bus is preparing to stop, and motorists should slow down and be ready to stop.

Violating Michigan's school bus stopping law is a civil infraction and can result in fines, and school bus stop-arm cameras may be used to help enforce the law. All Chesaning Union School District buses operating within the Village limits are equipped with such stop-arm cameras. A protocol is in place for issuing citations based off the stop-arm cameras and the Chesaning Police Department takes a zero-tolerance approach to the enforcement of school bus violations.

The bottom line: When you see a school bus with flashing red lights, stop and wait. A few extra seconds can help keep children safe.

This month our department will be participating in the national high-visibility enforcement of impaired driving in both the Village of Chesaning and Chesaning Township.

Next in our Meet the Officer Series is Officer Trevor Lincoln!

Officer Lincoln is originally from Montcalm County, where he received an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Officer Lincoln then graduated from the Grand Valley State University Police Academy in 2021. Officer Lincoln has prior experience in Law Enforcement and Fire Services, serving as a Deputy with the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office for 3 years, and as a Firefighter, with the Sheridan Community Fire Department for 6 years. During his time as a Firefighter, Officer Lincoln was also on the Department’s training committee, and a member of their Rapid Insertion Team (RIT; a specialized search and rescue team). In addition to being a loving husband and father, Officer Lincoln is also a civilian fi****ms and organizational safety instructor, and holds a variety of other public safety related certifications and trainings.
