We’re so proud to be able to say that Mike Sweeney is our Friends of the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum President and Leader! He’s such a wonderful Friend to our community.

📚 A little TLC goes a long way!

The little library at the Community Resource Building needed some TLC, and Commission for Veterans and Military Families member Mike Sweeney stepped up to help!

Mike took the time to repair the library and get it back in working order so community members can continue to stop by, take a book or share one of their own.

Thank you, Mike, for lending a hand and helping keep this small but meaningful community resource available for everyone!

Talking BIG in 1901! The Beach Baseball team was certain they would beat the team champions from DC ... but alas, the Maroons, the DC team, beat out the "Beach boys" and further claimed they would win as often as they met!
[It's fun to note that an early baseball field in the beach was approximately where Kellams Field is today ... AND where the swamp was an issue!]

There were a few questions about locations of amusements in early Chesapeake Beach recently. I've labeled a Sanborn Fire Insurance map of Chesapeake Beach from 1923 with some of the more notable buildings and amusements at the beach. What a site that boardwalk must have been!!!

Picnicking in Chesapeake Beach was 'the thing' to do! There were picnic grounds galore in the beach! We've heard stories that passengers upon arrival, that hired young boys to run to get the best tree covered spot for a picnic!

Favorite Photo Friday with the Great Derby in Chesapeake Beach! c.1920
The Great Derby was built & ready for the 1916 summer season! It operated until around 1925, and was finally dismantled in 1927.

On this day on August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote was signed into law. *It is of note that discrimination and voter suppression continued for women of color until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawing discriminatory voting practices was passed.
