Please follow these tips to minimize the chance of an E bike or other battery powered equipment failure. In addition to the tips below always disconnect a device or battery that is fully charged from the charger.
Over the weekend HT45 responded to a structure fire at a multi-family apartment complex with the possible origin being an e-bike. The fire occurred in the early morning with the residents waking from the sound of an explosion. Upon exiting the residents discovered their e-bike on fire and quickly exited the structure. The bike was found plugged into the wall and had been left charging for multiple days.
Lithium-ion battery fires continue to rise, but many can be prevented. Take the following precautions to minimize the risk of a battery fire:
• Avoid leaving your e-bike battery unattended during charging
• Always use the battery charger and power adapter that were provided by the manufacturer
• Avoid purchasing used batteries or chargers for your e-bike
• Carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and use
• Keep the battery away from flammable materials such as upholstery or clothing while it’s charging or in use
The Brothers and Sisters of Local 2449 would like to say THANK YOU to our Brothers and Sisters in Blue. Every day and every night they report for duty ready to protect our lives from harms way. Their sacrifices are great and they rarely get a thank you. Always remember they are here to protect and serve which they do every day not knowing if it will be their last.

Chesapeake Fire Department is hiring!!!!!
The Chesapeake Fire Department is a great opportunity. Our department is not just Fire and EMS care and transport but we also have very robust Special Operations Programs including Technical Rescue and Swiftwater Rescue, Foam Team, Hazardous Materials, Marine Incident Response Team, SWAT Medic, as well as a Marine Team. We also have a very solid ALS Paramedic program. If you want to provide more advanced care you can step up your game and the city will send you to Paramedic school.
There are opportunities to join Virginia Task Force 2 USAR Team and the Disaster Medical Assistance Team. These programs provide rescue and care not only Nationally but as well as Internationally. Our members have responded to disasters in Haiti and Puerto Rico, as well as Nationally to areas devastated by Hurricanes and large scale incidents such as Surfside building collapse in Florida.

Awesome to see Baltimore City quickly implementing recommendations after the loss of Lt. Paul Butrim, FF /PM Kelsey Sadler, and FF/PM Kenneth Lacayo in a structure fire. The vacant building, weakened from previous fires, ultimately collapsed on them only a few minutes after making entry.
The full report is contained in a link of the attached article.

Thanks to BCFD Admin for following the recommendation from the Stricker Report. Here is a new Battalion Technician in action. It’s staffed by a member who assists the Battalion Chief with incident management & accountability. It also complies with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) & makes our scenes safer.

How busy are we?
Often there are three questions firefighters ask other firefighters when you meet at conferences, training, etc. Where do you work, how busy are you, and how many stations?
Well so far, as of 0700 November 26th this year your Professional Firefighters of Chesapeake have responded to 32,497 calls for
service. This is a 1,419 call increase from last year at this same time.
Your Professional Firefighters of Chesapeake operate from 15 Fire Stations with 17 Engine Companies, 3 Ladder Companies, 1 cross-staffed Heavy Rescue, 12 full time Ambulances and 2 part time Ambulances.
Brothers and Sisters, the November union meeting will be Tuesday 11/29/22 at 1900 at our union hall. Our union hall is located at 120 Kempsville Road. We will take nominations for the 4 Vice-President spots on the Executive Board. Any active member in good standing can be nominated or make a nomination. Any member nominated will have an opportunity to accept or refuse the nomination. You must be present at the meeting to make a nomination.
We have seen some new members recently and hope to see more at this meeting.
Chesapeake Local 2449 like to express thanks to all who serve. Fire, Police, EMS, Sheriff, Nurses, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard. Anyone who stands a watch to protect others and place their lives in harms way so that others may live.
The fire service is unique in ways but the same in others. The sacrifices being made are all similar.
We hope everyone has a blessed Thanksgiving and ask you think of those serving locally and abroad.
Please keep the family and friends of those affected by the tragic incident that our Brothers and Sisters responded to recently at a local Walmart store.
This is copied and pasted from another site Fit to Fight Fire. It exemplifies what it is like to have the best job in the world.
As I head into the firehouse to work this thanksgiving, I am full of gratitude for what we get to do and who we get to do it with. Although I would rather be home with my family, our job requires us to work holidays.
It's part of the deal in getting to be a firefighter. We work holidays, birthdays, and all types of family occasions, and we do it for our communities so that when they call, we are there for THEM.
There are very few jobs where people look at who they work with as a family. We do! For all working at the firehouse today and serving your communities, be grateful for what we get to do and who we get to do it with, our brothers and sisters.
And above all, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, and His love endures forever.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.
Psalm 136:1
The Brothers and Sisters from Chesapeake Local 2449 would extend our condolences to the families and friends of those killed at Walmart in Chesapeake. To have such a tragedy occur anytime but especially during the holiday season makes it even more tragic.
To the Firefighters, Police Officers, Investigators, and Forensic Technicians and anyone else who responded. It goes without saying but will be said, you did an outstanding job in responding to this incident. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to a Brother or Sister if you need anything.

Your Professional Firefighters of Chesapeake IAFF 2449 proudly responded to five hundred thirty-nine calls between 0700 6/5/21 through 6/11/21 0700. This included three hundred forty-six Emergency Medical Service calls, sixteen motor vehicle accidents, one of which was an entrapment, twenty automatic/smoke false alarms, forty-seven Battalion level responses, seventy-two EMS Supervisor responses, and other calls for service. There were two building fires, one car fire, and Engine 7 responded to Moyock North Carolina to assist with a working structure fire. You may have wondered how we get water to areas of the city that do not have fire hydrants. Each engine carries water ranging from 500 gallons to 1,750 gallons. When a fire occurs we typically have an attack engine and a nurse engine on scene. A fleet of engines, known as a water task force, are dispatched, including high volume tankers from Va Beach, Moyock, and South Mills NC, and water is shuttled to the fire on the apparatus tanks. The closest water source may be a city hydrant or an engine sets up a draft at a static water source such as a pond, stream, ditch, or even a swimming pool if necessary. The video below demonstrates one way an engine gets water from a static source. This engine then refills the water task force engines as needed. Your Professional Firefighters of Chesapeake IAFF 2449 proudly serve the citizens and visitors of Chesapeake and surrounding cities 24 hours per day 365 days per year.
Your Professional Firefighters of Chesapeake IAFF 2449 proudly responded to 96 calls for service on 5/25/21. This included approximately sixty-two Emergency Medical Service calls, six motor vehicle accidents, three false/unintentional alarms, seven Battalion level responses and eleven EMS supervisor responses, all minor in nature including one outside electrical fire, one outside equipment fire. All in all a break from a very busy week.
