Congratulations to LT Karin Evelyn, stationed at Sector San Juan, who participated in the Titans Ultimate Outdoor Challenge with two other Coastguardsmen. (LT Evelyn is pictured on the left)

Nearly 1,100 people participated in the 3-4 mile arduous event on treacherous terrain which consisted of 15-25 obstacles similar to those used in military training to test endurance, strength, speed and dexterity. Obstacles included climbing over walls, carrying heavy objects, traversing bodies of water, and crawling under barbed wire. Karin, along with her teammates, crossed the finish line in 1:42:59 in 41st place.

Announcing: The 2016 Month of the Military Child Art and Essay Contest « Coast Guard All Hands

Coast Guard Kids... get out your pencils and crayons!

April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, and this is a time where we recognize the challenges, sacrifices and contributions our little ones make to parents serving in the Armed Forces.

This year, the Coast Guard Foundation is sponsoring the Month of the Military Child Art & Essay contest. This wonderful initiative gives U.S. Coast Guard kids a chance to tell us all what it’s like to be a military child.

We're excited to see the entries!

As April comes to an end, we hope you took advantage of April’s designation as the Month of the Military Child and found ways to recognize the challenges, sacrifices and contributions our little ones make to parents serving in the Armed Forces.

Awarded for the first time in 2015!!

Recognizing that sports competition builds camaraderie and esprit de corps, the Coast Guard developed and awarded for the first time in 2015, a Unit Sports team Award. For 2015, Coast Guard Maritime Safety & Security Team Los Angeles/Long Team won this award. - CONGRATULATIONS!!

This unit sports team competed in a variety of running and cycling events in 2015, most notably the Mojave Death Race and the Bataan Memorial Death March. The Mojave Death Race is a grueling 275 mile, 24 hour relay race in the Mojave Desert that consisted of 24 legs that included running, mountain biking, and road cycling, all the while enduring temperatures well above 100 degrees. The team finished third in the first responder division and fifteenth overall. The annual Bataan Memorial Death March consists of a 26.2 mile race in full uniform at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. This race is held in honor of Bataan Death March survivors. MSST LA/LB members respectfully brought home a fifteenth and sixteenth place finish in the Military Light category.

The team also gave back to the community through a number of outreach projects, including “Heal the Bay,” the Cabrillo Beach clean-up program and “Coasties in the Community,” creating a monthly volunteer event for other community programs in the local area.

Congratulations to Damage Controlman First Class Lindsey Arcangel who has been named the 2015 Coast Guard Elite Male Athlete of the Year!

DC1 Archangel distinguished himself in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He competed and placed in several national and international competitions. He received a bronze medal for placing third in the Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, one of the largest international tournament of its kind in the world. He took home second place in the San Jose North American Grappling Association Championship, second in the Rio Combat/Oakland Mixed Martial Arts/Pacific Ring Fight Club In-House Tournament, third in the Santa Cruz Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Pro, and second in the Jiu-Jitsu World League San Francisco Open. DC1 Arcangel also gave back to his community by teaching Jiu-Jitsu in the local area. DC1 Arcangel is currently stationed at Coast Guard Base Alameda, CA.

The honor of Elite Athlete of the Year is achieved by hard work, dedication, and skill and the title is bestowed on one Coast Guard female and one male athlete each year. What makes this honor especially noteworthy is that these athletes reached this high level of athletic success on their own time, after performing their military duties and responsibilities.

Big Congratulations to LT Nyrel Allen who has been named the 2015 Coast Guard Elite Female Athlete of the Year!

LT Allen earned this recognition in the sport of powerlifting. A native of Tucson, LT Allen maintained an intensive training regime which came together in 2015 at the Washington State Championship. HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to LT Michael Wurster for completing the 2015 Ironman Maryland triathlon on October 17th!!

This was LT Wurster's second Ironman distance race consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run. While training for the race in late March of this year, LT Wurster was struck and injured by a vehicle that required surgery and three months of physical therapy for a severed bicep. Encouraged by his co-worker and training partner, CWO Ian Christian who was also signed up for the race, LT Wurster continued to train throughout the summer. Battling cold temperatures and high winds on race day, he finished in 9:45:25 improving his previous time by almost 35 minutes. He placed 8th in his age group and 37th overall out of over 1400 participants!

Not your average Sports competition, but for Coast Guard LCDRs Kelly and Michael Moyers, skydiving in formations is a normal part of their weekends.

LCDR K. Moyers and LCDR M. Moyers competed in the Virginia Parachute Council - A 4-way skydiving competition in July. Moyers and Moyers, teamed up with another married skydiving couple, Patricia Miranda and Sean Corey, naming their team “Happy Wife, Happy Life.”

“4-way” is a discipline of skydiving where 4 skydivers jump together making formations as fast as possible. Each correct formation is 1 point, a team has 35 seconds in each skydive to get as many points as possible. “Formation skydiving is very challenging, falling at speeds over 110mph, and the difficulty of controlling your body in freefall,” said LCDR K Moyers.

LCDR K. Moyers, has been jumping since 2001, and has over 800 skydives. LCDR M. Moyers introduced to the sport by his wife, and now has over 200 skydives.

Despite the heat and little team practice, Team “Happy Wife, Happy Life,” earned the Bronze Medal. Both Moyers, plan to someday compete at the National level.
