I love this space, and I'm constantly looking for ways to incorporate this more into my life. When we allow ourselves to step into the unknowns, we pen doors to new possibilities 💜

Comfort and growth have never been about a balancing act. Too much comfort can lead to boredom, self-absorption, and discontent. You can either be fixed and stagnate or stretch yourself — become uncomfortable — and grow. Choose the latter. Breaking your own mold can only make you stronger and more confident to see what you are made of, both in your professional and personal life. Stretch yourself. Go where you are challenged, where you are asked to become more than you were. That means creating new perspectives, acquiring new skills and pushing boundaries. These tasks may seem more ‘painful’ at first, but you’ll surprise yourself with what you learn. Be intentional about doing things that push further. At the same time, be wary of burnout - the idea is for you to feel even more alive. You have more in you than you know. Challenges help you to grow.

Today is my birthday. It is bittersweet, the old ends that close but the new beginnings ahead. I'm excited sh*tless (instead of scared sh*tless) for all the possibilities this next year of life holds. Bring it on 💜

Words matter. I’ve been taking a bit of a break from posting over the past couple of weeks, mostly because I felt that I needed to do a mental health reset. Finishing my first year of PhD studies and having a book published simultaneously was no small feat. I’ve learned a lot about myself and others in my life over the past year, and I know that these challenges have created growth in me, which I do not take for granted. I feel very fortunate to have been able to have these opportunities.

One thing I want to share that has helped me to get through the difficult days is positive words. Yes, I speak positive words to myself, but the positive words I have received from others have been even more helpful. I found that no matter the weight of the struggle, a positive affirmation, a compliment, or an encouraging word helped to lighten the load, almost like a battle buddy taking my ruck for a bit on a long ruck march.

Those encouraging words hung onto my heart longer than a negative or pessimistic comment. A client told me a couple of weeks ago, “You are my clover in a field of weeds,” and just today, a previous teacher of my son emailed to tell me about a kind gesture she witnessed in him that brought her to tears. Even words from strangers on this platform have encouraged me to keep pushing. I truly appreciated those words. Just think how little time it takes to share our thoughts at the cost of nothing. I encourage you to think of any kind words that have been spoken to you recently and share them. Also, take an extra moment to say something nice to someone else. The world can always use more kind words.

Don't let being first be a reason to stop you. I am the FIRST provider at the Hampton VA to offer sandtray therapy. I'm not going to lie and say it wasn't intimidating to put myself out their, to do the briefings, and to make a pitch for it. But I did it, and I made it happen. I've done over 20 group sessions with it already and don't regret putting myself out there one bit. Anything I can do to help my patients heal, you better believe im going to do it. If you are questioning if you should put yourself out there, the answer is yes!

I'm delving more into art to shake off the day. As a trauma therapist, I often need a place for all the emotions to go. Feels good to calm the nervous system with art 💜

Yesterday I got rejected. The store I went to to ask about selling my book said, "No, books just don't sell in here." That's ok, I was bummed but I'm not going to take it personally. As a military spouse, I am all too familiar with experiencing rejection personally and professionally in relationships and within employment. I have learned that despite rejection, I never give up on myself. I'm sharing this because I've had people say it seems as if things come easy for me. Welp, that is definitely not always the case. I'm going to keep talking about my book and sharing its message no matter what. I'm excited to discover the re-direction in the process!

What is one thing you can do today to take a chance on you? I will go first. I plan to pitch my book to be placed in a local store front. Am I nervous? Yes. Do I have self-doubt? Yes. But... I remind myself that I have something to offer, and no one can pitch ourselves better than we can. So, I'm putting myself out there today. I can let you know what happens. Either way, I'm proud of myself for taking a chance, and I won't be swimming in the "what-if" pool. Now, what about you?!
