The heat index is expected to be in the triple digits this afternoon. Be sure to drink plenty of water and limit outdoor activities. Check on your neighbors and keep an eye on your pets. If you need a cool place to rest, visit one of the Chesapeake Public Library branches listed below between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m.
Registration is open for this month's Nature Academy in Nature's Classroom program! Youth will discover the different layers of soil, different types of soil, and what lives there. Spaces are limited and fill quickly. To learn more and register: https://bit.ly/3QxBvuT
Paddle Your Way Participants! For those bringing your own vessel to the event tomorrow, August 12, at Oak Grove Lake Park, please use the detour route below as there is construction along Byron Street to the small parking area to access the boat launch area of the lake. For more information about the event: https://www.cityofchesapeake.net/761/Paddle-Your-Way
Illuminate your end-of-the-summer celebrating and go out with a splash! For more information about the Splash Park visit https://bit.ly/3NhPeUU.
Visitors to Bells Mill Park will be able to enter on Albemarle Drive from Cedar Road. The Great Bridge Community Center will be closed all day Saturday, August 19, for this exercise.
On Saturday, August 19, the City of Chesapeake will conduct a training exercise during which public safety personnel and City staff members will simulate an active threat at City Hall. Here’s what this means for the community:
CLOSURES
All Municipal Center roads, as well as the Municipal Center Recycling Drop-off Site, will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Central Library and Great Bridge Community Center will be closed all day.
SIGHTS & SOUNDS
There will be heavy police and fire presence on-site that day, occasionally using their lights and sirens. While loud noises will also be part of the exercise itself, the activity will take place within City Hall, so we don’t anticipate those noises being audible outside of the Municipal Center.
The Chesapeake Emergency Management, Police, and Fire Departments regularly conduct training exercises that prepare first responders and City employees to help the community during an emergency. All City Departments have a role to play in emergency response, whether during the incident or afterwards during recovery. No matter what the emergency, preparedness is key. Find tips on preparing yourself and your family for any emergency by visiting Ready.gov.
Paddle Your Way, this Saturday! August 12, 9 am to 2 pm for a day on the water at Oak Grove Lake Park.
The Ballahack Boat Ramp and Parking Area will temporarily close to the general public, boaters, and vehicular traffic for construction work to include paving of the existing parking area adjacent to the boat ramp and associated improvements at the Ballahack Boat Ramp area along the Great Dismal Swamp. The trail will remain open to bicycle traffic during the construction phase.
