The entire Dismal Swamp Canal Trail will be milled and repaved beginning November 23, 2020. During this project, one lane sections will be closed for all recreational usage. A portion of the trail will remain accessible for pedestrian use during the process. Trail users are asked to be extremely cautious near the construction activity areas and around uneven and unmarked pavement and to observe physical distancing guidelines. The project is expected to continue until late December, weather permitting.

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ (VDWR) Urban Trout stockings at Northwest River Park’s Lake Lesa have been postponed until further notice due to unusually low dissolved oxygen levels. VDWR staff is in communications with park staff and will be monitoring the lake. Future trout stockings (in 2020 and 2021) will be contingent on suitable dissolved oxygen levels.

Chessie's Back!

Legend has it there are mysterious happenings in the Dismal Swamp this time of year. Many have spun their tales surrounding Chessie’s recent disappearance from the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. Native American legend tells of a great healing pond within the Swamp, Cautaka, where animals bathe and grow well again. It is invisible to hunters, for as soon as they see it, the vision fades away. It is said there are bear tracks everywhere around this pond, for the bear is a great healer. Did Chessie visit Cautaka? We can only imagine what might have happened, but the wait is over, and Chessie has returned to his vantage point keeping a watchful eye on the Trail, now better than ever! #DismalSwamp

On October 15, 2020, Ches A. Peake, aka Chessie the Bear, vanished from the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. What could have happened? Strange things happen in the swamp this time of year. Folklore and tales conjure images of mysterious ghosts, eerie lights, and magical creatures, all in the setting of dense forest and murky, dark waters. The trees whisper, “Never fear--Chessie will reappear.”
Spin your tale of Chessie’s disappearance from the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail in the comments below. #DismalSwamp
