FIELD TRIP FRIDAY!!
Today we welcomed Western Branch High School to Sector Portsmouth, where they got to experience first hand some of the awesome opportunities we have in the Coast Guard!!
Chief Sara Santos:
“I grew up poor to a single mom who had three kids in Oakland, California. When I finally left home and was out on my own, the 2008 market crash didn't help anybody. I ended up homeless working four jobs and scrounging around to be able to either afford gas or food, not both. After trying to do this for a couple of years from the ages of 18 to 20, I decided enough was enough and I would join the military. I thought it was the easy way out and then I would only do it for a couple of years until I got on my feet. Looking at the different branches thoroughly I chose the Coast Guard because out of all of them it seemed like the one that best suited me. I grew up in a household full of drugs and I wanted them off the streets. Coast Guard is the one and only branch that is perceived to saves lives and not take lives, after everything in the news about desert Storm from the 1990s the other branches seem to be an option for someone who was looking for war and to take lives. I loved the idea that the Coast Guard was first and foremost to be a lifesaving branch and secondly to stop drugs from coming to our US borders. Once I joined, all I wanted to do was make sure that I was important enough to help out and make a real difference in the Coast Guard, and inevitably the situations in my hometown, wanted there to be less drugs. I became an intelligent specialist because I saw it as an opportunity to make real change in every facet for all missions at the Coast Guard has to offer. Now that I'm in over 14 years, I can safely say the Coast Guard has been one of the best opportunities that I've ever taking advantage of. Going from homeless to now owning three homes, I went from deciding whether or not I can afford food or fuel to get to and from work to having my costs covered and money in savings. The Coast Guard gave me all of the training and paid for my college and most importantly provided a family for me to call mine through all of the amazing people I've met just by being in.
Thank you Chief Santos! You’re an inspiration to us all ♥️
Today we observed basic leadership training that our local NJROTC units are completing through the weekend!
This mini bootcamp prepares high school students for military basic training, and also improves their discipline and leadership skills.
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY! 💗

“Hello I’m ME2 Bradley. I serve to support my community and my country. As a civilian I serve as a police officer. As a coast guard reservist I support active duty missions when needed. In the past I have supported in SAR and LE operations at boat stations and enforced security zones at the GTMO detention center. I am now able to give back to the coast guard by assisting at recruiting office Hampton Roads. “
💙 Thank you ME2 ! We enjoy having you in our office and your support has been essential for our mission, We appreciate you!
LT Tia Grandville
( Recently selected to promote to LCDR😌)
“ The educational opportunity— being a recipient of the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) Scholarship inspired me to join the Coast Guard. What inspired me to stay, however, is decidedly more important; the unique missions, humanitarian service, and the people. My passion to serve stems from my family‘s lineage of military servicemen/women and community activists/leaders. The Coast Guard has not only afforded me opportunities to learn and establish a skill set in the Maritime Safety & Security realm, but it has also allowed me to engage with the community and give back in ways that I never imagined. I’m honored to put on the uniform every day and be a role model for my sons, the community of youth that I serve, and my mentees. It’s important to show them that we (minorities/women) can do anything we set our mind to! “
💙 Our office is extremely fortunate to have LT Grandville, she is a strong mentor and example of what embodies a strong leader!
NO PRESSURE… Judges for today’s Maury High School NJROTC drill competition include 5 members of the United States Coast Guard Honor Guard!
Our Honor Guard is the embodiment of our Core Values; Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. They may be some of the most junior members of our service, but it takes the utmost professionalism and commitment to be part of this elite team.

“ I joined the Coast Guard initially because I was young and not exactly sure what I wanted to do in life yet. But I continue to serve because I believe in the Coast Guards mission of saving lives and protecting our nations coast! Being in law enforcement and knowing that I’m helping keep all of our families safe makes me proud to serve! The Coast Guard has become a second family I can depend on! I look foward to growing the CG family by becoming a Recruiter this summer. “

“ I serve because it is my dream job, being raised on the water around boats, nothing got me more excited than seeing the Coast Guard speed past us to save a life, or stop drugs from entering our country. From driving boats for Search and Rescue cases, to jumping on Narco Subs, My career has been beyond exciting and rewarding. Every day that I am behind the helm on the water, I remember why I serve.”

“ The Coast Guard is not a real Military Branch” 💁🏻♀️
The Coast Guard is one of our 6 branches of the Military. Even though the Coast Guard is not a part of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), the Coast Guard is part of the United States Armed Forces (also known as the military). Technically, the Coast Guard is both a federal law enforcement agency and military branch within the Department of Homeland Security.
Throughout its long history, the Coast Guard has also been a part of the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Transportation.

Did you ever hear that we have a 2 year wait list?!
🚫 it’s FALSE information !

Busy and Fun fall🍁🍂
We are incredibly proud of Dayoan’s determination and drive. He displayed strong perseverance as he overcame obstacles throughout his recruitment, eventually earning his boot camp reservation on December, 13th. His recruiter, DC1 Estrada, was moved when he said, “I want this more than anything, and I’ll do whatever it takes to achieve this.” He never gave up, and persevered.
He is a proud husband and a wonderful father of 3. Dayoan will be going to guaranteed OS “A” School after graduating boot camp, and will receive a $20,000 bonus. Keep up the good work Dayoan, as you take on the next challenge of becoming a Coast Guardsman.
YN2 Figueroa and IS1 Davis spent Monday and Tuesday afternoon speaking to NJROTC juniors and seniors at Maury High School!
It is always fun to introduce young people to the Coast Guard, bust some myths, and share this exciting career opportunity.
But don’t take our word for it… fact check, google, watch YouTube videos and talk to members who serve!
If you are interested in more information about the Coast Guard, message the page or call our office to speak with a recruiter!
Thank you to ME1 Davis from Maritime Security Response Team East (MSRT-E) for coming out to speak to our physical training participants this morning!!

Did you know that all jobs in the Coast Guard have been open to women since 1978? Today 3 of our recruiters talked about their unique experiences as a woman in our service!
