Chief Sara Santos:

“I grew up poor to a single mom who had three kids in Oakland, California. When I finally left home and was out on my own, the 2008 market crash didn't help anybody. I ended up homeless working four jobs and scrounging around to be able to either afford gas or food, not both. After trying to do this for a couple of years from the ages of 18 to 20, I decided enough was enough and I would join the military. I thought it was the easy way out and then I would only do it for a couple of years until I got on my feet. Looking at the different branches thoroughly I chose the Coast Guard because out of all of them it seemed like the one that best suited me. I grew up in a household full of drugs and I wanted them off the streets. Coast Guard is the one and only branch that is perceived to saves lives and not take lives, after everything in the news about desert Storm from the 1990s the other branches seem to be an option for someone who was looking for war and to take lives. I loved the idea that the Coast Guard was first and foremost to be a lifesaving branch and secondly to stop drugs from coming to our US borders. Once I joined, all I wanted to do was make sure that I was important enough to help out and make a real difference in the Coast Guard, and inevitably the situations in my hometown, wanted there to be less drugs. I became an intelligent specialist because I saw it as an opportunity to make real change in every facet for all missions at the Coast Guard has to offer. Now that I'm in over 14 years, I can safely say the Coast Guard has been one of the best opportunities that I've ever taking advantage of. Going from homeless to now owning three homes, I went from deciding whether or not I can afford food or fuel to get to and from work to having my costs covered and money in savings. The Coast Guard gave me all of the training and paid for my college and most importantly provided a family for me to call mine through all of the amazing people I've met just by being in.
Thank you.”

Thank you Chief Santos! You’re an inspiration to us all ♥️

LT Tia Grandville
( Recently selected to promote to LCDR😌)

“ The educational opportunity— being a recipient of the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) Scholarship inspired me to join the Coast Guard. What inspired me to stay, however, is decidedly more important; the unique missions, humanitarian service, and the people. My passion to serve stems from my family‘s lineage of military servicemen/women and community activists/leaders. The Coast Guard has not only afforded me opportunities to learn and establish a skill set in the Maritime Safety & Security realm, but it has also allowed me to engage with the community and give back in ways that I never imagined. I’m honored to put on the uniform every day and be a role model for my sons, the community of youth that I serve, and my mentees. It’s important to show them that we (minorities/women) can do anything we set our mind to! “

💙 Our office is extremely fortunate to have LT Grandville, she is a strong mentor and example of what embodies a strong leader!

BM2 Jorge Rivera, stationed at Small Boat Station Georgetown

“ I serve because it is my dream job, being raised on the water around boats, nothing got me more excited than seeing the Coast Guard speed past us to save a life, or stop drugs from entering our country. “ The Coast Guard is not a real Military Branch” 💁🏻‍♀️

FALSE 🚫

The Coast Guard is one of our 6 branches of the Military. Even though the Coast Guard is not a part of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), the Coast Guard is part of the United States Armed Forces (also known as the military). Technically, the Coast Guard is both a federal law enforcement agency and military branch within the Department of Homeland Security.

Throughout its long history, the Coast Guard has also been a part of the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Transportation.

We are incredibly proud of Dayoan’s determination and drive. He displayed strong perseverance as he overcame obstacles throughout his recruitment, eventually earning his boot camp reservation on December, 13th. His recruiter, DC1 Estrada, was moved when he said, “I want this more than anything, and I’ll do whatever it takes to achieve this.” He never gave up, and persevered.

He is a proud husband and a wonderful father of 3. Dayoan will be going to guaranteed OS “A” School after graduating boot camp, and will receive a $20,000 bonus. Keep up the good work Dayoan, as you take on the next challenge of becoming a Coast Guardsman.

Hello everyone! I'm on the team of a new resource for military families (active duty, spouses, retired) who have a service or skill to sell. This includes any business (photography, sewing, tutoring, etc.). LineCrew (https://linecrewteam.com/) is an app (launched this spring) and they are looking for new CrewMembers, especially Coast Guard, to build their nationwide directory. It will be another support and resource for people when they PCS and have to build a new customer base in a new location. Please take a look, sign up, or pass it along to anyone who would find it helpful!
