My drive is to bring a positive energy to the work I do every day and that comes from my supportive family and friends helping me along the way. In my rating, I want to make other people's lives easier, as my family does for me. Moving around the United States and going through a worldwide pandemic has brought a different set of struggles for families. If I can do something in my daily work to contribute to making another person's life easier, I would do so with a smile on my face.

Amazing!!! Not your average job!!! Come be a part of our team for some adventure!!!

Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron operations started as an experiment in 1998 to halt the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S. Drug trafficking organizations primarily used “go-fast” boats, high-speed smuggling vessels capable of traveling over twice the speed of Coast Guard cutters. The Coast Guard needed a way to counter the threat.
In late 1998, six Coast Guard pilots and four enlisted aircrew developed tactics and procedures to utilize armed helicopters operating aboard Coast Guard cutters to answer the call.

HITRON helicopters operate in known smuggling vectors and rely on expertly trained aircrews and precision marksmen to disable go-fast drug smuggling vessels in the event suspects refuse to comply with verbal and visual warnings for law enforcement boardings in accordance with international maritime law.

In this documentary series, we track down the founding members, pioneers, and stakeholders who have played an important part in HITRON’s history. In this video, we sat down with Rear Adm. Donna L. Cottrell, Ninth District Commander, and asked her to talk about her experience as the 6th Commanding Officer of #HITRON.

Check out this detailed post about what it’s like serving underway!

If you have never served at Sea, it hard to know what life is like underway. That’s why I invited CAPT Holly Harrison, Commanding Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Kimball, to write a guest post about the cutter’s recent deployment. #SeaStories #GlobalCoastGuard

While the global pandemic has significantly slowed daily life for many, the U.S. Coast Guard has been busy, including the Coast Guard’s newest fully operational National Security Cutter – USCGC KIMBALL.

Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) fishing has replaced piracy as the #1 threat to the global maritime security threat. It undermines a nation’s sovereignty, threatens its economic security, and has significant impacts across the world.

This past patrol, KIMBALL worked in partnership with other nations to shine a light on this threat, including New Zealand, Fiji, France, and Australia.

KIMBALL’s crew deployed aboard the cutter for four months. Life underway can be challenging in good times, let alone during a global pandemic. When we did pull into port for fuel and food, no one was allowed to leave the ship. Imagine being at work 24/7 for four months and having little to no control over when and how to relax? We knew going in it would be difficult so we worked hard to find ways to make it better. Supervisors adjusted work and downtime around an individual’s duties. Bingo, trivia, and casino nights were popular, as were ice cream socials and video/card game tournaments. Memes about the patrol were also popular, and a good sense of humor went a long way. We initiated 104 shipmates into the Realm of the Golden Shellback when we crossed the “X” (dateline & equator). We continued to develop our crew-wide Leadership and Inclusion professional development efforts and held team-building challenges disguised as fun, such as Damage Control “Olympics.”

Serving in the cutter fleet is not always easy, but it is extremely rewarding. With some ingenuity and forethought, my shipmates rose to the challenge to get KIMBALL ready for and execute her first mission to protect our oceans from illegal fishing despite the new pandemic obstacles thrown our way, just as good Coasties do every day whether it be for a hurricane, oil spill, or search and rescue.

We were and remain “Semper Paratus”… Always Ready."

Bravo Zulu Mr. Burke!! Another well deserved award! Mr. Burke, a CSPI alum; has devoted countless hours to help with recruitment for the CSPI program in the Hampton Roads area. Help us celebrate his accomplishments!

Happy Friday!

Bravo Zulu to Lt. j.g. Derek Burke. He received an honorable mention in the 2020 National Blacks in Government Military Meritorious Service Award.

This award honors members of the federal workforce who display the core values of honor, respect, and devotion to duty; demonstrate a commitment for the full integration and promotion of African Americans within the Coast Guard military and civilian workforce.

Burke’s honorable mention is a true testament of his character, dedication, and willingness to move the needle towards a fully diverse and inclusive Coast Guard.

He is a product of the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI); he graduated from Winston-Salem State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. The CSPI program provided Burke the opportunity to receive a 2-year full-tuition scholarship for students who attend minority-serving colleges and universities.

While assigned to Sector Virginia as an enforcement officer, he is also the director of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Outreach; he plays a vital role in the implementation of the Coast Guard Atlantic Area’s (LANTAREA) first Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Norfolk State University. This MOA significantly increased opportunities for students to learn about the Coast Guard’s CSPI Scholarship Program.

He partnered with Hampton Roads Recruiting Office and the NSU’s Military Affairs representative to provide presentations and first-hand Coast Guard experience to thousands of students and parents during a career expo.

Furthermore, he spearheaded the use of the NSU’s billboards, including one on the Main Clock Tower, to advertise the CSPI program to over 5,000 students on campus.

An excellent Coast Guard ambassador, Burke served as a panel member during the HBCU Summit at Elizabeth City University, North Carolina. As the junior member on a panel full of senior officers, he fielded questions from representatives of the White House Initiative on HBCUs Staff, DHS Minority Recruitment, six university executives, and Officer Trainees (OTs). Dr. Arthur McMahan, White House Initiative on HBCUs, and Vice Adm. Buschman, then commander, Atlantic Area, quickly recognized his outstanding actions.

Furthering his efforts to build a more diverse Coast Guard, he coordinated an HBCU University Missions Day and Virginia State University tours for minority serving institutions to Base Portsmouth with flag level visibility.

Burke is a champion for inclusiveness; he co-chairs the Leadership Diversity Advisory Council (LDAC) for Sector Virginia and is an active member of the National Naval Officers Association - NNOA. Through his LDAC co-leadership, he has supported numerous events to include a Black History Month celebration and multiple brown bag leadership lunches.

He truly lives the Coast Guard’s ethos of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. He is a leader of infallible character and selfless action, inspiring those who know him and creating opportunities for the leaders of this service.

Congratulations to all those recognized by the program and all the men and women making a difference in their communities and committed to higher education.

Leadership you can count on in the Coast Guard! Way to go Senior Chief!

Our #DeckPlateLeaderoftheWeek is Senior Chief Marco Cowley, Officer in Charge of Station Pensacola!

Senior Chief Cowley is the lynch pin between NAS Pensacola and the Coast Guard. He continually attends and supports events to ensure partnerships within his community and units. He is a clear communicator and leads his personnel in a positive direction while accomplishing successful operations.

Senior Chief Cowley is part of the core group of members that established the Panhandle Chief’s Mess. BMCM Sulski, BMCM Kannan, and BMCS Cowley worked together to consolidate the members of eastern Sector Mobile’s AOR and form a Chief’s Mess to ensure kinship was not lost with members extended through the three state areas. They achieved a level of camaraderie, which brought forth a new layer of mess support throughout that particular area of the Gulf.

He goes above and beyond to mentor, develop, and assist junior personnel. He continually pushes his crew to do more and become great leaders inside and outside the #CoastGuard. He holds each individual under his charge to be a positive impact on the area - whether it’s with the co-located Navy, the public, or shipmates.

Thank you Senior for being an example to our core values, and leading from the front!
