๐Ÿ”Š๐Ÿ”Š WHAT IS YOUR WHY โ‰๏ธ

Meet 23 year old Phil Speri. Phil is a graduate ๐ŸŽ“ from Catholic High School in Virginia Beach and Old Dominion University in Norfolk. He was an All-American Swimmer ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ for Old Dominion Aquatic Club and has a passion for lifting ๐Ÿ‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ, riding his motorcycle ๐Ÿ, and being on the beach ๐Ÿ– as much as possible.

"My initial interest in the Coast Guard was a result of my father, a retired W-3 (Chief Warrant Officer) from the service. As I learned more information and met more Coast Guardsmen, it seemed like a fantastic fit for myself. I have always enjoyed working a smaller community, such as VBLS (VA Beach Lifesaving Service), and I am enamored by their mission that focuses more on humanitarian efforts as opposed to war-time defense."

Do you think you have what it takes to join our ranksโ“โ“

๐Ÿ”Š๐Ÿ”Š WHAT IS YOUR WHY โ‰๏ธ

"My name is Sabrina Lugo and I am 21 years old. When I was in high school I did cross country, track ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ, basketball ๐Ÿ€, and volleyball ๐Ÿ! I thought I knew what I wanted to do and that was going to college to pursue my dreams of running. College was fun at first, but it wasn't what I was expecting and you can say college wasn't for me at the time.. throughout all of this my wife was already enlisted into the US Coast Guard and we were stationed in New Jersey. I always noticed how happy she was and the benefits that the Coast Guard provides are truly life changing. My wife has always supported me โค in everything that I have done in my life and we came to the conclusion that the Coast Guard was definitely something I needed to get into to accomplish my goals. This is the reason I joined and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us."

Does this sound familiar to anyone?! Don't hesitate to see what opportunities we have available for you TODAYโš“

Chrishaun Reaves and Hassan Land have been best friends since 4th grade at Tanners Creek Elementary School in Norfolk, VA. Both grew up in Norview where they managed to stay busy playing ๐Ÿ€ basketball and video games ๐ŸŽฎ. Since the 10th grade, both men have been wanting to join the USCG and got a taste of the military lifestyle while participating in JROTC. Both shipmates are finally making their dreams a reality and enlisting under the USCG's Buddy Program which allows friends to enlist as well as go to boot camp together, fostering the transition into the military life that much more supportive. This Afternoon the USCG Hampton Roads completed a historic moment in our history by swearing in two members into our Active Duty ranks BEFORE they have completed Basic Training. The USCG desires to access potential recruits delayed by COVID at TRACEN Cape May directly into the USCG in order to keep faith with our newest members. Just another way the USCG demonstrates our commitment to our incoming family members. #GoCoastGuard #SemperParatus #askmehow #jointoday #FacesOfTheCoastGuard #uscg #gocoastguardhamptonroads #militarycareers #military

In the Coast Guard, even our most junior members take on leadership roles.

This is SN Britney Ruth, the leading seaman aboard the CGC WILLIAM TATE, a critical member of the deck force. In her off-duty time, SN Ruth maintains her Emergency Medical Technician certification in Pennsylvania and serves as a volunteer EMT with a local rescue squad. Before joining the USCG, SN Ruth worked for several different ambulance services. Naturally, she aspires to be a health service technician, and I know she will make an excellent addition to our medical corps. Bravo Zulu SN Ruth!

We know dogs like rides in the car - but #DYK they love flying in helicopters even more!

Coast Guard Canine Explosive Detection Teams (CEDTs) from U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety & Security Team - 91105 and USCG MSST LA/LB 91103 recently conducted vertical delivery training with an U.S. Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter.

Dog/handler teams are trained to detect explosives and dangerous materials in ports and aboard vessels. The teams practice being hoisted from helicopters regularly to prepare the teams to deploy and sniff out potential threats offshore.

U.S. Coast Guard CEDTs are critical workforce multipliers supporting the National Strategy for Combating Terrorist Use of Explosives by providing operational commanders with explosive detection capabilities.

Coast Guard canines and handlers continue to be on the front lines of defense, and today's Coast Guard has 18 nationally deployable Canine Explosive Detection Teams strategically positioned at eight locations across the country.

SEARCH AND RESCUE MISSION!

SEARCH AND RESCUE MISSION!

Our watchstanders at the 5th District Command Center coordinated the rescue of two boaters whose sailboat had become disabled in really rough weather. The sails had torn, the engine had quit, leaving them a drift 345 miles from the nearest shore. After receiving an alert on the situation, we launched a C-130 aircraft from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C. to make contact with them while our watchstanders sent out a call for help. The KSL Santiago, a bulk carrier, was in the area and volunteered to assist. Now the boaters are safely aboard the much larger vessel and reporting no injuries.

โ€œThis could have gone much differently given the weather conditions, the fact that the boat was disabled and that it was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean,โ€ said Mr. Kelvin Morgan, operational unit controller for the Fifth District command center. โ€œThe fact we have partners like the crew and captain of the KSL Santiago allows cases like this to have a happy ending.โ€

This past weekend our #CoastGuard Lady has formally transitioned to her new home in Rogers, Arkansas at Innisfree Senior Living.

A HUGE THANK YOU to our members from the CGC Muskingum and MSD Fort Smith who volunteered to help Lois pack her final items and assist her with settling into her new place.

Lois lived in her home for over 40 years, where she dedicated countless hours of writing heartfelt and welcoming letters to the men and women of our service. She has written more than 40,000 letters to over 40,000 Coasties.

There has been many people involved with Loisโ€™ transition these past few months, and I want to take the time to say Thank you to U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River, the crews of the Muskingum and MSD Fort Smith, the local and national Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association (CPOA), and all who have supported Lois through the years.

To help Lois get acquainted with her new arrangements, please take a few minutes to send her a letter of encouragement and recognition for all she has done for our Coast Guard workforce.

We love you Lois!

U.S. Coast Guard Mid-Atlantic

United States Coast Guard Inspection crews ensure the USNS Comfort is ready to sail for life-saving missions around the world.

USNS Comfort, a U.S. Navy hospital ship operated by Military Sealift Command has a long history of assisting with response to disasters ranging from Hurricane Katrina to the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Critical deployments like these would not be possible without the U.S. Coast Guard women and men who check safety, life-saving, and engineering systems critical to assuring the vessel remains ready to sail. #readyrelevantresponsive

Here are some images of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Virginia Prevention and Inspections crews confirming our maritime industry vessels meet safety and engineering standards. Sector Virginia Marine Inspectors conducted a 3-day inspection of USNS Comfort. Sector Virginia Prevention and Inspections operations continue full-time in this major commercial and U.S. Navy port.

An amazing National Naval Officerโ€™s Association (NNOA) mentor and trailblazer! A lot of wisdom and experience has been shared by CAPT Norwood while attending annual conferences and monthly chapter meetings. We thank you CAPT Norwood for your service and efforts. A reputable and remarkable service member.

A well-deserved and honorable mention by our very own Commandant.

Today we remember an extraordinary shipmate, CAPT Percy Norwood, USCG, retired, who passed away on Nov. 27, 2020. CAPT Norwood had an exemplary near 30-year career, Commanding the then CGHQ Support Command and Headquarters Staff, and serving as the first Director of the Coast Guard's Recruiting Command (1995-98). Earlier assignments spanned many mission areas and disciplines. CAPT Norwood was also an ardent champion for an inclusive and diverse Coast Guard. In 2017, his contributions to talent management, illegal fishing enforcement, and his community were recognized in the Congressional Record https://bit.ly/3mtFeaX.

His legacy endures as we continue our commitment to creating a Service that better represents the American public.
