Today's graduate feature is Oscar Smith High School graduate, C/SMSgt Robert McCracken. He will be attending Shenandoah University on an academic scholarship this fall and pursuing a degree in business. During his time in Civil Air Patrol, Cadet McCracken graduated from Honor Guard Academy, mentored cadets in color guard, served as a first sergeant and flight sergeant in his squadron and spent ample time utilizing his emergency services skills as a (GTM3) ground team member and (UDF) urban directional finding team member on many training exercises and missions. He attended multiple Virginia Wing encampments as a student and later on as a staff member and most notably lent his photography skills as a cadet public affairs officer for the squadron, where his talents earned him a CAP National Public Affairs Howell Balsem award in photography in 2019. When asked how CAP has impacted his life he responded, “CAP has definitely taught me how to lead and the value of respect in an organization and how the chain of command and good leadership can improve a squadron.” Please join us in congratulating C/SMSgt McCracken on his high school graduation and for his time and service with our squadron. We are proud of you! #CAPcadets #MARVA141

Crashed Airplanes are HARD TO SEE

Finding a downed aircraft from the air presents unique challenges for CAP scanners, observers and mission pilots. “Our aim is not to be good general aviation pilots. Our aim is to be safe aviators who can deploy this equipment to do a job.” -Major Rod Rakic, CAP Mission Pilot, Great Lakes Region Illinois (GLR-IL-312). #Flight #CAPsafety #GoFlyCAP

If you have a moment to send a birthday card or forward a picture of Col Guertin you may have taken; follow the link to submit any photos you may have of her. Happy early birthday Col Guertin!

(Only a couple days remain to contribute!)
Lt Col Carolyn Guertin is an original member of CAP and Virginia Wing. She joined as a cadet on the first day CAP took membership applications and has been an active member of VAWG ever since. Her 92nd birthday is 29 June and we want to make it special. VAWG has several plans in the works to give her a special day, and here are two ways you can be involved:

1. Send her a birthday card. Please mail it directly to the Virginia Wing Headquarters, 7401 Airfield Drive, Richmond VA 23237, by 22 June. NHQ is also collecting cards across the nation and will be forwarding them to our wing HQ. Lt Col John Payne, her squadron commander, will collect the cards and deliver them on her birthday.

2. Send us a photo (or more than one) of her with you or with other CAP members. Use your M365 account to submit photos at the site below, along with names of who is with her, date (or best guess), and activity (if known). The photos will be used to make a photo book as a gift for her. You can submit at any time before her birthday, but to be considered for the Photo book they must be submitted NLT 20 June. Photos submitted by 28 June may be considered for use in social media posts.

Lt Col Guertin is a living legend in CAP and Virginia Wing. Please join us in letting her know how much she means to us.
