Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and recognizes the ongoing journey toward freedom and equality for all.

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Texas and announced that enslaved people were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.

We honor the resilience, contributions, and achievements of Black Americans who have helped shape our communities, Commonwealth, and country. Juneteenth serves as both a celebration of progress and a reminder of our shared responsibility to build a more just future for all.

Before school got out last week, I stopped by Grassfield Elementary to visit with some amazing 2nd graders and their teachers! We talked about government, leadership, and what it means to be a good citizen. Their curiosity, thoughtful questions, and enthusiasm always give me hope for the future.

It was wonderful spending the afternoon yesterday with community members, families, and local organizations at the fifth annual Pride in the Peake! Chesapeake and Suffolk are stronger when everyone feels welcomed, valued, and respected. Happy Pride Month to all who are celebrating across the 89th District and throughout Virginia!

🏃‍♂️ Western Branch High School – VHSL Class 6 Boys Outdoor Track & Field State Champions
🥎 Grassfield High School – VHSL Class 6 Softball State Champions
🤼 Grassfield High School – VHSL Class 6 Wrestling State Champions

These championships are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, and families. We are proud of all they have accomplished and congratulate every student-athlete in Chesapeake and Suffolk Public Schools on an outstanding year so far!

The Virginia House of Delegates is proud to recognize Dr. Stephanie Alston of Kings Fork Middle for being named Suffolk Public Schools’ 2025–2026 Citywide Middle School Teacher of the Year and Districtwide Teacher of the Year.

With two decades of service in education and a passion for helping students succeed, Dr. Alston has made a lasting impact on countless students and families throughout Suffolk. It was an honor to commend Dr. Alston alongside her colleagues as we celebrated her outstanding dedication to students, literacy, and public education.
