Effective Coast Guard communications start with well-trained people enabling technology to help put steel on target. This nation’s best military communicators stand the watch every day at the Communications Command as a force multiplier for all USCG missions. Today’s rescue of 3 mariners is a shining example as our long-range communicators distributed the necessary urgent marine information broadcasts as well as performing flight following for the on-scene HC-130. Exceptional work by Team Coast Guard in supporting the rescue of these 3 mariners during this search and rescue case for this vessel taking on water approximately 46 miles southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina.

It has been a whirlwind hurricane season with back-to-back storms along the Gulf Coast. The Communications Command has been working tirelessly side-by-side with District 8 personnel since the middle of August. There is nowhere we would rather be than conducting communications operations to support recovery and rescue efforts.
Please join our Deployable Communicators for a quick ride-along as they deliver mission-critical communications capabilities during their deployments to Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Delta and currently Hurricane Zeta. Hurricane Delta and Zeta were both Category 2 hurricanes at landfall as they devastated the same regions as Hurricane Laura just over a month prior.

In the wake of Hurricane Delta, the Communications Command deployable communicators quickly restored mission-critical communications to the Lake Charles area. They delivered the versatile Multi-purpose Portable Antenna Tower (MPAT) to support the delivery of VHF communications to the surrounding area that was devastated by the strong CAT 2 hurricane on Friday, which caused significant damage to an existing radio tower.

Over the last few days our COMMCOM team deployed to Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Laura, has been hard at work restoring communications to the effected region.
Surrounded by aligator filled bayous they worked throughout the night to set up the Rescue 21 Disaster Recovery System at Grand Chenier; restoring vital multi mission and Search and Rescue communications in the area.
The team also set up the multipurpose portable antenna tower and VHF radio communications at USCG Station Lake Charles helping the station to communicate with deployed assets conducting a wide variety of missions on the lake, in an area where nearly all communications had been destroyed by the Hurricane.
Together these towers provide VHF radio coverage to an area of approximately 1500 square miles.

COMMCOM members along with a technician deploy on another type of asset, the MH-60 Jayhawk.
With an exceptional crew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater they attempted to gain access to and assess damaged communications sites in southern Louisiana along the path of Hurricane Laura, a destructive category 4 hurricane with winds exceeding 150MPH.
We thank AIRSTA Clearwater for the assistance and wish them a safe flight home.

Happy National Radio Day!
National Radio Day recognizes the great invention of the radio. Maritime radio communications have been an essential part of Coast Guard operations for decades and has helped shape the history of the Service. From radio beacons that once transmitted from lighthouses and lightships to the worldwide reach of LORAN and the earliest shipboard radios to today's SATCOM and Rescue 21, the broad array of radio systems utilized by the Coast Guard is almost too numerous to list.
