Thirteen women joined the ranks of the FDNY last week, bringing the total number of female firefighters to the highest number in the department’s 157-year history on International Women’s Day.

The 13 newbies were acknowledged by acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, the department’s first female commissioner, who noted that they would become “role models” for all future generations.

“I want to say to you 13, today you’ve accomplished more than just completing a tough curriculum,” said Kavanagh. “You have become role models and heroes for a generation of women and anyone who thought they could not have a place at the table.”

With the 13 new graduates, the FDNY’s total number of female firefighters was brought to 134 – accounting for a little more than 1% of the department's more than 10,000 firefighters.

According to the FDNY, the first Pakistani woman to ever join the department, Aisha Loane, was also among Tuesday’s graduating class.

The women were a part of a graduating class of 291 probationary firefighters who will now go on to join firehouses throughout the city, where they will gain field experience alongside senior firefighters and officials.

Instead of Heat, Going for the Cold

A team of female firefighters have come together to form the
Antarctic Fire Angels. They are the first female group to trek across the Antarctica.

"There aren't a lot of female explorers compared to men. We want to go out there and show women we can do this kind of thing. We hope to inspire other women to have the confidence to go out there and achieve the thing they want to do."

This post has been fact checked and found to be Partly False.
From fact check: Our rating: Partly false
Based on our research, we rate PARTLY FALSE the claim that, in an emergency situation, cellphone users can change their voicemail greeting without service or data. It's true that cellphone users can change their greetings over Wi-Fi or a landline, but they can't change their voicemail settings using a phone without service or data, as the Instagram post makes it seem.

UPDATE: This viral post being shared in outdoor, hiking, and other community groups on Facebook that recommends you change your voice mail with a recording of where you are rather than calling 911.
This post contains some potentially LIFE THREATENING MISINFORMATION.
First, if you have a weak signal or a low battery and need help, DO NOT WASTE TIME trying to change your voice mail, call 911 immediately.
If you use up the last of your battery changing your voice mail, nobody is going to know you need help.
Second, you cannot change your voice mail when you have no cellular signal. It's just not possible.
What you should do is make use of the AdventureSmart trip planning app: https://plan.adventuresmart.ca/
You can use this app to let a trusted friend where you're going, when to expect you back, and it will alert them if you do not check in. You can use this for any backcountry activity and even for other activities like driving long distances where cell service may be spotty.
Politely let your friends and contacts know that this post, while well meaning, is not good information and should not be shared.

Happy Summer y'all! One more season closer to Chesapeake Camp Fury 2022!!!!!

02/27/2021

Meetings and conversations have occurred this week regarding Camp Fury Chesapeake 2021 and what it would look like this year. Unfortunately, COVID has impacted the lives of everyone and continues to do so this year. Just like all of you, I was hoping to make this a banner year for CFC 2021, but the risk is too great, and our campers deserve so much more. It has been my recommendation to work on making CFC 2022 "The Best One Yet!" Summer 2022 is looking like the majority of our population will be vaccinated and our community will be safer and healthier for it. With all that being said, Camp Fury Chesapeake 2021 is cancelled with hopes of a GREAT return in the Summer of 2022.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. We are one more holiday closer to Camp Fury Chesapeake 2021!!!!

08/04/2020

As you all know we should be ramping up for another AMAZING year of Camp Fury Chesapeake 2020, but this pandemic put the brakes on. As much as we'd love to see you all this year, we all have to practice social distancing not only for ourselves, but for others. I assure you we are working on Camp Fury Chesapeake 2021 and hope to see you all there!!!

HAPPENING NOW: Camp Fury Chesapeake is teaching local girls what it's like to be a first responder. They get to learn all kinds of skills this week...from women already in those careers!

I got to try one of those skills, much to the entertainment of WTKR News 3 anchors Blaine Stewart & Jessica Larché. I recommend you watch til the end...
