We are saddened to learn the news of the passing of Lt. Clary. Dean was a true friend and supporter of the Bensley-Bermuda Volunteer Rescue Squad. He played a significant role in mentoring and training our members during calls, especially while he was stationed at Co. 21 and we primarily staffed our south station, RB 3. He went above and beyond to foster camaraderie between the two agencies like having us over at the fire station for a classic co****le tournament, or burgers and ice cream. Dean was always approachable on calls and easy to ask questions to, qualities that made him beloved by our volunteers. His guidance and efforts have left a lasting positive impact on our squad.

Our thoughts are with Dean's family, friends, and his colleagues at Chesterfield Fire and EMS.

Chesterfield Fire and EMS is saddened to report the passing of retired Lt. Robert “Dean” Clary, who lost his valiant battle with cancer earlier today.

Lt. Clary was a 28-year veteran of Chesterfield Fire and EMS. Prior to his retirement in 2024, he served in various roles at the Chester, Wagstaff, Bensley, Ettrick, Harrowgate, Manchester, Winterpock, Courthouse Road, and Matoaca Fire Stations. Lt. Clary was also a paramedic and during his career with the department he received several awards for his service to the community, including for helping save the life of a patient during Hurricane Isabel in 2003.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dean’s family during this extremely difficult time.

We were so grateful to have our ambulance helping lead the Walk for Peace procession yesterday. Standing as medical support to monks and spectators alike, we had the opportunity to help es**rt the monks through our primary coverage area, Chesterfield County. Our squad hosted the traveling group at our station, and were beyond thankful to be a part of the team, accompany them across the county. We recognize their admirable strength and persistence, through storms and ice, taking their resilience as inspiration for our agency.
