The pickleball courts at Chubb Park were closed until Tuesday, September 3 for the installation of lighting. They are now reopened. The next time that they are going to be closed is when the light poles themselves need to be craned into place. We will advise when that is going to happen to give all users enough notice.

Severe weather is no joke… So help us get the word out!

Since many of you have been following our weather posts from yesterday, we want to use this opportunity to provide some education and increase knowledge on this important topic with the hope of decreasing the impact of the events we’ve experienced since yesterday’s storm!

We started the day yesterday with a positive message that also contained information on the impending storm that was anticipated later in the day. Our message highlighted the following:
• Strong wind gusts
• Standing water and flash flooding
• Flash Flood Watch
• driving in water and the dangers associated with trees and power lines coming down
• Watch the conditions and make smart decisions regarding driving and adjust your speed

Based on the release of the weather data, everyone had significant time to plan.

Our motto here at the Morris County Office of Emergency Management is that we don’t have “problems”, we have “issues”, and for every issue there is a solution.

So let’s work TOGETHER to come up with a solution for any future “issues” that may arise at the time of our next storm here in Morris County. And yes, unfortunately there will be a next time!

First and foremost, the Morris County Communications Center handled over 1,000 calls throughout the storm. We are lucky to have an incredible team of TRUE first responders who fielded a significant number of emergency calls and dispatched our Police, Fire, EMS, and OEM personnel to various calls across the county. All of our local first responders, including the Morris County Sheriff's Office, did a fantastic job.

Although we have experienced some fast-moving severe storms in the last several weeks, we want our first responders to NOT have to do such a fantastic job next time!

Here in Morris County, we recognize we will always have emergencies and we will always respond and do the right thing in the best interest of the public. With that said, during a storm, it is important that the public works in partnership with first responders by recognizing that before calling 911 during a severe weather event, you ask yourself if the reason for your call is a TRUE life-threatening emergency. Although every call will be answered, each non-emergency call that comes into 911 has the potential to impact response times to immediate, life-threatening emergencies.

In addition, YOU have the power to make the decision if getting on the road or attempting to drive through a flooded area is in the best interest of you, your family, friends, and first responders.

We want all our police officers, fire fighters, and emergency medical personnel to make it home to their families at the end of their day too. If you don’t need to put yourself in a dangerous situation to begin with, you have a better chance of ensuring your own safety and leaving resources and emergency personnel available to respond to other emergencies.

As the result of last evenings storm, we had a number of water rescues some of which involved people on the top of their cars waiting for help to arrive, along with car accidents and injuries that likely could have been avoided in many cases.

Smart decision making by all of YOU is what will allow us to have better solutions to issues that arise next time!

Lastly, as a County OEM our weather messaging focusses on an overview of our County as a whole. In addition to following our weather updates, we encourage you to monitor your local weather forecast as well for specific information and timing of storms. Weather data is always available via a number of resources. Stay informed!

Often time in our business its lack of communication that leads to challenges, and we think this may play a role here. This narrative is simply designed to get a conversation started and to get people thinking about their own safety, as well as the safety of the first responders who are willing to risk it all to serve you! It may just be that one call where they don’t get the chance to go back to their families after a night out with you, and we will always do everything we can to ensure that doesn’t happen.

Please help us get the word out! Prioritize your safety and the safety of others! In turn, you will be partnering with us to prioritize the safety of our community and first responders.

The Morris County Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the weather as it relates to the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby as our attention turns to tomorrow. At the time of this communication, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory that is in effect tomorrow from 6am-8pm. The greatest impact for our area appears to be tomorrow afternoon through Friday evening (potentially 4pm-midnight). The current weather forecast suggests that rain will increase tomorrow morning with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms throughout the remainder of the day and overnight. Current data shows a 1-3” range for Morris County.

It is very possible that some flooding may develop later in the day/night and the risk of trees and or powerlines being impacted is certainly an issue due to the existing ground saturation. Winds on Friday afternoon and Friday night are anticipated to be sustained at 15-20 mph with gusts to 30-55 mph not being ruled out. While the forecast data does include a tornado risk for the afternoon and evening, the data suggests that the risk for Morris County is generally low. The current weather mapping suggests that the heaviest rain will likely occur to the west of Morris County.

The Morris County Office of Emergency Management along with our partners at the Morris County Sheriff's Office, Morris County Communications Center, and Morris County Government will be working throughout the weather event supporting our Morris County municipalities. Please only call 911 for an emergency.

We have been in touch with our partners at Jersey Central Power and Light and they are bringing in 150 contractor crews into the area in anticipation of this weather event. Members of the public should be mindful of roadways that are flooded and they should NOT try and drive through standing or moving water. Keep in mind that with power lines and trees being brought down by the wind, they may be beneath roadway water that you cannot see and those energized power lines could be deadly.

JCP&L personnel are prepared to respond to potential service interruptions caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby, which is forecast to bring heavy rains and gusty winds to New Jersey. Company meteorologists have been tracking the storm for several days.

JCP&L is implementing their storm response plan, which includes:
- Implementing 16-hour-shifts for storm personnel with around-the-clock coverage, including line, substation and forestry personnel.
- Staffing additional internal operators, damage assessors and analysts at distribution control centers to assist with high volumes of outage calls.
- The deployment of an additional 150 contractor crews.
- Flood mitigation measures have been tested and enacted at substations in flood-prone areas.

In the event outages occur due to severe weather, customers without power are encouraged to report their outage by calling 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877), clicking the “Report Outage” link on www.firstenergycorp.com, or by texting out to 544487.

Stay Safe!

Heavy rain and potentially strong winds are forecasted for the area during the next 24-36 hours.

With the saturated ground and wet limbs/leaves, coupled with the already dead Ash trees, falling trees may block roadways and down power lines.
