Chester Fire Department was paged to 2711 State Street in Chester for a structure fire. Chester Police were first on scene and reported a fully involved detacted garage fire threatening to catch the house on fire. Ellis
Grove and Steeleville Fire were called for mutual aid.
First arriving fire units were able to knock the garage fire down before it reached the house. The house received minor damage and the garage was a total loss.
Fire is under investigation but believed to have started by a space heater. This fire was a challenge because of cold weather and the snow storm.
Once again Chester Fire would like to thank the mutual aid departments and Chester Police Department.

The Chester Fire Department would like to thank the Ellis Grove, Steeleville, Perryville, and Sparta Fire Departments for all their help on the structure fire on George Street this morning. Also the Chester Police Department, Medstar Ambulance and the Chester Maintenance Department. It was a difficult fire and the cold weather made it even more dangerous. Every one did a great job and we were able to protect the structure on the right side which was on only 5 feet away.
We also want to thank the Chester Dairy Queen for the hot coffee and food.
