Here’s a fun little feel good story for everyone during baby deer season.

A resident contacted me about finding a fawn on her property. Baby seems healthy and doing fine. After several phone calls and some research, and a lot of chatting, we made a plan to leave baby alone because mom was likely nearby doing her mom duties and had left baby in a safe place.

I asked the resident if they had trail cams and they agreed to use them to see if they could catch mom coming back at night for baby. And guess what? She is alive and well and caring for her newborn.

Here are some tips:

If you find a baby deer, do not touch them or go near them. Observe them from afar for signs of distress or injury. Contact animal control with any questions.

Please check tall grass and pastures before mowing. Mama deer often hide their babies from predators in tall grass and leave them for periods of time to distract predators away from them.

Please always use caution around any wildlife and don’t touch or leave a scent until you have talked to an ACO.

This has been a very rewarding case, and I am very thankful for all parties involved, which includes advice from experts and a very knowledgeable youth agriculture student/expert hunter.

Moral of the story- be patient and use your resources. These residents in my town did the right thing!

Lots of calls for our turtle friends lately!

Please watch the roads! Turtles across Massachusetts are on the move. Our facility is swamped with calls for turtles that have been hit by cars, like the gentle giant pictured here. ⁣

We are primarily seeing male common snapping turtle movement. If you find a turtle in the road, stop and help it across in the direction it was facing. ⁣
⁣
If you find an injured turtle, TAKE IT WITH YOU even if you cannot transport it to a wildlife rehabilitator. Contain the turtle in a dark, dry box. No food, no water, and no at-home medical treatments! Contact your local wildlife rehabilitator right away. ⁣

Rocky was found in Windsor and is now home safe!

Plainfield and Cummington! Keep an eye out! This handsome boy took off into the woods at his home at 9am and is wearing an orange vest. No collar. His name is Rocky.
