Hot vehicle deaths are preventable. Remember to A-C-T!

It's summertime - please remember the devastating consequence of leaving children in hot cars. On average, a child dies from heatstroke in a car every 10 days. Their caregiver simply forgot or did not know they were in there. Don’t risk injury or death by leaving a child in a car even for one minute, even with the windows down. Put your purse, briefcase, left shoe or phone in the back seat with your child as a reminder that they are in the car with you. Be sure to lock and secure your car so kids cannot enter on their own. Every child deserves support! The Virginia Division of Child Support (DCSE) works hard to ensure that parents receive the child support they are owed and all parents are supported in helping their children grow and thrive. Child support is so much more than just money. Children with actively involved parents perform better in school and have higher self-confidence that leads to later success. Concerns about the lack of mass vaccination events in Chesterfield County. Mass events make a difference. VSU is doing a great job but not much outside of that. There are many elderly following all the registration instructions given and still waiting to be scheduled. Chesterfield is a vast county with multiple venues, new schools and mega churches. Mass vaccination events would be helpful.

to last weekend when an incredible team of county departments, staff and community partners assisted residents experiencing extended power outages.

The Feb. 12 ice storm caused thousands of Chesterfield residents to lose power. While most had their power restored in a few days, 820 households across Ettrick-Matoaca were left in the dark. A second ice storm rolled through the county less than a week later, hitting hard the residents still without power. Knowing these residents were in need, several county departments and community partners jumped into action:

▪️ Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Social Services assessed citizens needs and provided coordination to access resources. Staff collaborated with Chesterfield Food Bank to bring emergency food bags to a food distribution event at VSU.
▪️ The Ettrick-Matoaca Chesterfield County Public Library opened with extended hours to serve as a warming and power location for those needing a place to escape the cold and charge their devices.
▪️ Chesterfield, VA Emergency Management sent out alerts through Chesterfield Alert notifying residents of the warming locations and other resources.
▪️ 's Communications and Media kept in touch with affected community members through targeted messages and conversations on the Nextdoor app.
▪️ Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation secured 3,000 bottles of water to be handed out at the Chesterfield Food Bank distribution event.
▪️ Chesterfield County Police alerted its community officers in the area and provided traffic support at the VSU food distribution event.
▪️ The Chesterfield Community Emergency Response Team also volunteered at the food distribution event.
▪️ And, a number of volunteers from Virginia State University assisted with food distribution at the Chesterfield Food Bank.

Thanks so much to everyone who lent a hand last weekend. We showed once again that Chesterfield County comes together when our neighbors are in need.
Many residents are in the dark tonight due to widespread power outages. If able, use a resource and be a resource!
