Hey Boaters, don’t winterize your boats yet!! Summer has ended, but there is still plenty of boating fun to be had by participating in the 27th Annual James River Parade of Lights on Dec. 14. Each year, boaters decorate their vessels and parade down the James River to mark the festive holiday season. Participants must register their boats (https://jrac-va.org/) to participate in the parade. Compete for awards, drawing prizes and, of course, bragging rights for the most spectacular displays!

Fantastic recognition for the good work happening here!

"The International RiverFoundation announced the James River as the 2019 Thiess International Riverprize winner at the International Riversymposium! Winning this award is a tremendous honor & tribute to the progress that we have made together with partners & individuals across the commonwealth of Virginia!

Receiving this award strengthens our resolve to continue improving the James River, and we also hope it will inspire everyone who lives, works and plays around the James River to jump in and help out so the James remains a vital asset for our communities and for future generations.

Congratulations should also go to Friends of the Chicago River and the Whangawehi Catchment Management Group as co-finalists for the award in recognition of their amazing achievements in river restoration work!"

2020 James River Parade of Lights is Canceled

Due to health precautions related to COVID-19, the James River Advisory Council has canceled the 2020 James River Parade of Lights originally scheduled to occur Dec. 12. The Parade of Lights has traditionally attracted large crowds to viewing sites along the river, and JRAC is prioritizing the safety of the community and its many partners throughout the region.
Join us here on Facebook or on YouTube at noon on Thursday, Dec. 10 for our next free virtual Banner Lecture, "Transforming the James River in Richmond" with Ralph Hambrick. The James River has always been the centerpiece of Richmond, but by the mid-20th century it had been abused and neglected. Today, the river draws visitors to its wooded shorelines, restored canal, and feisty rapids. Hambrick chronicles the events, projects, and controversies that brought about this dramatic change.

Hambrick is uniquely positioned to share his expertise on this topic, as a local author, professor emeritus in public policy & administration at Virginia Commonwealth University, member/former chair of the Falls of the James Scenic River Advisory Committee, member/former co-chair of the James River Advisory Council, former whitewater canoe instructor, raft guide, and all-around river enjoyer.
