Firefighter Friday: Recruit School Edition

Last night, the future firefighters of Recruit School 72 got to show off all the skills they’ve learned so far in fire school for their loved ones out at our Enon Training Center. Family Night is a tradition for recruits as they inch closer towards graduation. After showing off their skills, the recruits got to sit down and enjoy dinner with family and other members of our department.

They now have just about a month left until they graduate. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on their progress the rest of the way!

Just after midnight (Friday), Chesterfield firefighters, who are flight-paramedics with the Med-Flight 1 program, assisted Virginia State Police, the Goochland Sheriff’s Office, and Goochland Fire and Powhatan Fire’s Water Rescue Team with a search of the James River after a pick-up truck was discovered in the water near Tucker Park and the Maidens Bridge.

The crew on Med-Flight 1 used the helicopter’s spotlight to assist firefighters in the water. That, along with the FLIR camera, helped crews determine that no one was inside the truck.

Med-Flight 1 is a partnership between Virginia State Police and Chesterfield Fire and EMS. In addition to searches like this, the crew also transports patients with critical injuries to the hospital and can perform hoist rescues in difficult terrain.

Just before 8 a.m. this morning (Friday), Chesterfield Fire and EMS crews responded to a call for a house fire in the 3300 block of Ellenbrook Drive. The first firefighters that arrived on scene found a fire in the kitchen. They were able to get the fire under control within 15 minutes and it was contained to the kitchen, however, the entire house suffered smoke damage.

There were no injuries, but a total of six people, four adults and two children, are displaced and being assisted by the Red Cross. The cause of the fire is believed to be unattended cooking.

Please watch this important safety message! Did you know closing doors inside your house could make a life-saving difference in a fire?

This helmet camera video was shot after a recent fire here in Chesterfield. You can see all the damage the fire caused to a hallway. Then, look at the difference when the firefighter opens the closed door to a bedroom. That closed door prevented the fire from spreading to that room.

Please share this video and use it as a reminder: if a fire breaks out in your home, close the door to the room where it’s burning to stop the spread. You should also consider closing the doors in your house when you are not at home and when you sleep as an extra safety precaution.

Recently, we wrapped up the first ever “Fire Service: Unlocked.” The hands-on program is designed to show younger Chesterfield residents the basics of firefighting while teaching them about Chesterfield Fire and EMS. It gave them an up-close look at the engines, trucks, tools, and lifesaving equipment our firefighters use every day.

During the last two weeks of the spring program, participants got to check out our Enon Training Center and see some of the tools used to train new firefighters. They also got to climb to the top of our training tower and watch firefighters simulate extricating someone trapped in a car, as well as putting out a car fire.

They wrapped up the five-week program at Station 5 in Midlothian by learning about our Arson K9 Detection K9 Clover and enjoying a firehouse dinner.

We can’t wait to bring the program back again in the near future!
