Sea View hospital was a sprawling complex for tuberculosis patients in Staten Island, New York. In 1929, the city recruited Black nurses from the South to fix the nursing shortage. They contributed to the development of a drug in 1951 to treat tuberculosis and tracked its effectiveness. By 1961, the hospital closed because it wasn’t needed anymore. It’s February! To kick off Black History Month, we are featuring Black Americans who made a difference in health care. Because it’s also American Heart Month, we’re starting with Dr. Daniel Hale Williams (1856-1931), the first Black cardiologist. But the firsts don't stop there. In Chicago in 1884, Dr. Williams opened the first Black-owned in*******al hospital, Provident Hospital. But wait, there’s more. In 1893, Dr. Williams helped a man who had a serious knife wound to the chest. He completed the first documented successful open-heart surgery on a human!
